I like the name Mamie
and where do you get the thought Meryl Streep and her husband are hillbillies??
Mamie isnt her birth name anyway.
it's Mary Willa
her mother Meryl's is Mary Louise
and i beleive Meryl'smother's name is Mary too.
so she had to have a pet/stage name
you couldent go around their house saying Mary and expecting only one person to answer could you?

Meryl grew up In New Jersey and was educated at Vasser and Yale
Her husband is a reknowned sculptor who came to New York City via Indiana.

The only other person I've heard of called Mamie was Pres. Eisenhower's wife, who came from an upper middle class family in Iowa.
What makes you think it's a "southern cliche-ridden name"? Are you perhaps confusing it with Mammy (as in
Gone with the Wind

Thank goodness someone had the sense to mention Mamie Eisenhower! Mrs. Eisenhower had some stiff competition back in the 1950s though, as another "Mamie" was hugely popular on the printed page, the stage, and the screen - Mame Dennis Burnside.

She should have called herself Willa Streep. It would have been a good name for her as an actress. IMOnot too crazy about the name Mamie either. And then coupled with Gummer. Not too crazy about that name either.

I've lived in the south my entire life, 45 years, and have only heard of two "Mamies", this one and Mamie Eisenhower. And Mamie Eisenhower was from Iowa, which is "NOT" in the south. And while Mamie Gummer's father may be from Kentucky, Meryl Streep is from New Jersey, also "NOT" in the south.
I agree it's a a weird name, though. The name "Mamie Gummer" brings to mind a 95 year old woman with no teeth.

I agree to a point. Mamie is such an old lady name, but I don't think it's directly southern. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s "Mary" was THE most popular name, so they came up with all kinds of nicknames (Molly, Minnie, Mamie, Macey, etc). She can not help her last name, but I definitely think that professionally Willa Streep, or even Mary Streep, would be preferable. Mamie Gummer takes me back to the 50s and thinking about dentures.

Mamie might be okay, but paired with "Gummer," brings to mind Mammy Yoakum from L'il Abner. (Even though Mamie and Mammy are pronounced differently.)
It's an old-lady name.
