I watched FLASH GORDON awhile back and I too felt he was dubbed. It does not sound like him in his other roles. I know in the early 80's movie producers were notorious for dubbing newcomers in the movies because they felt a "professional" actor's voice would work better, Andie McDowell was dubbed in one of her early films and that guy who starred in the remake of The Lone Ranger were reportedly dubbed too. So it's very possible Sam was dubbed in this movie.

I've recently watched Flash Gordon and his voice doesn't connect with his face. Can't explain it but it's the impression I got.

I also have to agree that his voice was dubbed.
I saw Sam when he did a guest appearance in Stargate SG-1 and (I know people's voices can change over time, but) his voice was NOTHING like it was in Flash Gordon, not even close.
His voice was extremely gruff and deep, which may be the reason they chose to dub in a more professional sounding voice actor to read his lines.
