Well, they're both about writers who write themselves into their work.
Synechdoche does it on a grander, more self-obsessive scale, but I do feel that Malkovich begat Adaptation begat Synechdoche. Even though they aren't direct sequels involving the same characters, there are themes in play which carry over and expand upon the previous entries. -

Charlie Kaufman does the unexpected, and he challenges himself. A sequel seems totally implausible, which is precisely why he would ever consider doing one. I don't think he would, actually. But I get 5b4what you're saying.

I'd surprised at the reaction to this thread. I can totally see him parodying sequels sooner or later, once he's explored every other area of the film industry.
