He probably couldn't write a screenplay if he tried. It's easy to criticise an artform, harder to participate in it. Like all these food critics we see on television nowadays - have you ever seen them actually COOK anything halfway decent in the kitchen? But who knows, perhaps Kermode isn't interested in writing films.

I think he alludes to it in his book. He said, if I remember correc1908tly, he would have no idea to how to diect a film. Could see him doing or adapting a screenplay, though.

Why don't you put your pen where your mouth is and start a career as a professional movie reviewer and do it better than Kermode?
That's about as retarded as your argument is.
With your logic, you have no right to complain at the restaurant if the food taste like sheit but you can't cook yourself. You have no right to complain to the doctor who mistreats you cause you don't have a clue what he did wrong. You have no right to complain when your car mechanic botches your car, cause you couldn't do a better job yourself?
With your logic, Uwe Bolls opinion have more value than Kermodes

Just to be clear I do like reading Mark's reviews and I do respect him as a film reviewer. However I do think he should just stick to reviewing films that aren't totally out of his league, I understand being a film critic you have to be open minded and that your fine with coming out of your comfort zone and watching a film you wouldn't normally watch. However how can you expect a die hard fan of The Exorcist to find a light-hearted chick flick like Bride Wars entertaining and truely brilliant? (Yes, he did make a comment about Bride Wars) I mean for instance the film's target audience is pre-teens and a majority of them are girls. Come on, it's like asking a fan of the Death Wish films to watch The Princess Diaries and enjoy it throughout then to give it praise for being so extraordinaire. They're two completely different films altogether, does he really expect to enjoy them as much as The Exorcist?

Hmm , prob coz of the old saying "stick to what yer good at". Being a film critic for so long , and having a sense of dignity , he wouldnt do it , or it would probably take him decades to even finish a script with all the re-editing and nit picking on it for absolute perfection.Has probably been told hundreds of times to "get off his behind and write a movie, a horror movie, instead of criticising people" , so with that pressure of the eyes of those directors and actors he has offended (though somewhat objectively , being a film critic) would add extra obstacles.
I dont think ive ever heard of a critic switching sides (prob are some out there), although i have seen comedians paule kaye or sacha baren cohen who both bashed various celebrities in a very direct way and now both star in major tv/film shows.Im sure theres less successful stories -

used to be a film critic with Empire magazine and broke out into making films.
Has done pretty well for himself as a result.
Be still Moriarty, do you want us both out of this suit?
