Yeah, I feel your pain (from over a year and a half ago). I just came here to see how old she was in the middle of the movie to see how she compared to the just introduced Angela character's age and now I already know something I shouldn't know. Sheesh. Once I saw her real age, I should have stopped and resumed watching. I always tell myself to avoid clicking on any forum threads, even if it's for an actor who appeared in a movie that's old enough not to be discussed much anymore, but I'm always surprised how I get spoiled in seriously unexpected ways. Back to the movie, I guess.

Renee Zellweger is just 10 years older than Alison Lohman and played one of her "foster Mothers" in White Oleander (2002). In this film she plays a 14 year-old character named Astrid. Alison was around 23 when she took this role. She does look younger than 30 at this point, that is for sure.

So you are implying she was 24 in the movie even thou16d0gh the movie came out when she was 23 ? So the movie was filmed AFTER the movie actually came out ? lol
And movies are not filmed and released on the same day, there are hundreds of hours of fottage that needs to be gone through, film needs to be edited, sound mixing, sound editing and so forth. The movie was filmed when she was 22 and I can say one thing, I am a guy and we age faster usually in that time window from 14 to 22 ,than women do, but I personnally looked pretty much the same at 16 and 22,save for a thicker beard. And at 14 I looked a bit younger than at 22. it worked for her because she was one of those girls who matured fast and stayed that way into her early 20s,not that uncommon, she still even had some baby fat seemingly,at 22,so she could pull off not simply 17,but 14 in this case.
Though nowadays theres plenty of 14year olds who could easily pass for 20+ with the hairstyles and overall styles and mature demeanor.
People don't really age from 14 to 22 if they had healthy living and little stress and not too much out in the sun without protection. Unless one was a slow developer and actually kept developing after 14. For guys it is common to develop until 16,for girls it is usually 14,for a few 15-16(due to nature giving them a biological clock that ticks out once they enter menopause),so sooner.
So 22 playing 14 is not as unbelievable as you might think
This comes from a currently 23year old guy,and with some movie make-up and a good diet and plenty of sleep for a couple of months before filming, and constant shaving lol,I could pull off a 14year old myself, more or less. lol
That being said not everyone can, some just look very adult-like by the time they are 22. She had tender features that a child has.
