Well it was the main reason why Jayne did so that night- to get the attention away from new girl Sophia Loren. She wasn't stupid, Jayne knew how to get the attention away and what's the best asset she has? Her boobs. They were her secret weapon.
I hear Sophia refuses to talk about that night.

It was a party to welcome Sophia to Hollywood, I believe.
Sophia does mention the incident in her autobiography and there is actually a photo of them together then which is a very nice photo of the two (taken immediately before Jayne let it all hang out). Jayne was very sweet but very competitive. -

I didn't say she had it done at the time in the fifties or sixties, because I don't know (or care) about the timeline of her breast surgery. Out of curiousity though, I did go on Wiki after reading your post, to see when the earliest boob job was. Apparantly they did perform them in the Mansfield-era already, but I agree with you: both hers and Marilyn Monroe's were real. -

Right as usual. Sophia had a fairly massive chest from day one. And there are early semi-nudes to prove it. Jayne's bust was nowhere near as big as Sophia's (or Elizabeth Taylor, for that matter.) But she had a huge ribcage and the apparent ability to hold her breathforever. This was a truly shocking night in Hollywood. Marilyn wore tight, low-cut gowns. Jayne's breasts were simply out, on the table.
Had implants been available MM would have certainly had it done. Yes, especially at the end, when she was so thin. Marilyn's bosom was lovely, but not over abundant when she was at her slimmestwhich is why I believe Monroe really didn't mind being plump, until the criticism became so great. (By the time she had her gall-bladder operation in July '61, she had dieted herself back down to her 1949 appearance in "The Asphalt Jungle.") -

Yes, but see, that's what photography does: it makes a fraction of a moment last forever. For all we know, Sophia may not have been "staring" at them at all - I doubt she was - but a fleeting gaze captured by the camera makes it LOOK as if she was. -
