Burt Campbell from Soap. Also he did this really funny turn in an otherwise terrible movie as a prison guard who had to keep jumping in the shower because one of the prisoners wives kept turning him on.RIP Richard.

His sitcom work was terrific (though, other than Soap, it was mostly awful material), but if you really want to be impressed, go rent Little Big Man, a 1970 Arthur Penn film, in which he played General Custer.
It's a comic performance; but unlike his sitcom work, which leaned heavily on his talent for playing befuddled, occasionally spastic characters, his Custer is poised, arrogant, quietly insane, and nuanced. He completely inhabits the character you wouldn't even recognise him if you didn't know it was him.
It's a shame that he was given so few roles that exploited the full range of his talents; if he had, I think he might have been considered one of the great American actors of his generation.

Absolutely the best role for this fabulous underrated comedic talent was in the remake of the Twilight Zone's Night of the Meek. If anyone could take the character of Henry Corwin/Santa as originally portrayed by the great Art Carney and make it his own, it was Richard Mulliganand that laugh at the end of the final scenepriceless!!

Also thought he was great in "The Toys from Caliban", another 80's TZ episode. But overall, I would have to say Burt from Soap

That was the first film I saw him in and I enjoyed his performance. It is sort of funny that he plays General Custer, since he did that in Little Big Man. At the time Teachers came out he seemed to be in several films that I saw at the time. He was in the awful Meatballs 2, Micki and Maude, and the next year's Heavenly Kid.

                          Burt (naturally)
                          Dr.Harry Weston (again, naturally)
Yet, there is one role of Richard's that attracted me the most

He was simply brilliant as General Armstrong Custer in "Little Big Man" (1971).
In my opinion he should have been at least nominated for a Best Supporting
Actor award for his work in this film.

Agreed! In a film with so many great memorable performances, he really stood out in Little Big Man. What a true showcase of talent that picture was! It's still a treat to watch even 37 years after it's release and Richard Mulligan's performance alone makes it worth the while, not because it was a historically accurate portrayal of general Custer, but because he shaped the character and made it all his own. Here's to a wonderful actor who made his mark in the kind of movie that stands the test of time.

My vote goes to Richard as Felix Farmer in "SOB"
He got to put on most of his noted Mulligan talents in that role.

I liked Mr. Mulligan's portrayals in "Empty Nest" and in "Little Big Man." However, I believe he was an extra in "Wall Street" of 1986. The scene was an assembly of businessmen in the film.
