What about CARMEN, Payne's UCLA short that's just been released onn the Cinema 16 American Short Films DVD in the UK. In Premiere this month AP says he thinks it's his best film.

Payne adds great imagination to what I've seen of his work. Most interesting was Citizen Ruth and the unusual photography, like the many images she saw through that little glass (forgot the name); her left and right eye seeing her leg at a different angle, but most of all, it seemed when Ruth got into a jam, she looked directly into the camera. It was quite human when she was lying in bed and heard those voices coming back to her, the judge, the nurse, Norman's boss, etc. Payne is the best to come along in a long time. Keep coming back!!!

In my opinion, his work is getting better and better. Citizen Ruth is a well made satire, but it's easy to tell that this is his first full-length film. Election was the best teen comedy I have ever seen (with plenty of adult humor for older audiences), About Schmidt is about the most honest slice o' life movie I have ever seen and Sideways is the best buddy/middle age crisis film I have ever seen (the acting in this one and music just made it magnificent).

Thank you. I was really hooked into Citizen Ruth, and gave much thought to each and every person involved individually just as if I was one of them. Always wondered what Norm Stoney would do if Cheryl turned up "accidentally" pregnant. She was sneaking out to drug parties and even sneaked a boy out of her room one morning. Most people are very strong in their beliefs as long as it is about somebody else. What happens when it hits Home????

If you missed Citizen Ruth, then you missed a great movie. Every actor was superb in this movie and it was like knowing the people, and all views on abortion were open. The movie did not take sides, just let you watch. Laura Dern went over the top on this one, playing the part of a steetwalker..and did it well. Thanks for your reply.

                                1. About Schmidt - just a beautiful film all round
                                2. Citizen Ruth - a spectacular performance from Laura Dern which made me laugh out loud several times
                                3. Sideways - magical, sweet and very funny
                                4. Election - excellent high-school satire with razor-sharp script and hilarious performances by Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon

Thanks. I was not too impressed with A high-school story, but was knocked off my seat with Citizen Ruth. That was my favorite movie for the last 20 years, and I have watched it at least 12 times. Each actor was at his best and Laura Dern really showed her talent as a street dog, a drunk girl, and then sympathetic after she lost the baby (and the money). This was Mr. Paynes finest, well planned and well laid out movie, and it was Laura Dern's finest hour where she could show a wide range of expressions. Today's movies seem to require a lot of violence, shootings, explosions, and bedroom scenes to get attention. This movie had very little of that, and still an interesting story. M Whitt

Youve watched Citizen Ruth 12 times or more? Wow, that is devotion. Laura Dern is such a special and underrated actress, her talent really outstrips most American actresses of her generation. She has such a gift for dark, twisted comedy. Payne should definitely cast her in another film in the near-future. The whole supporting cast of Citizen Ruth were all on top form too - Swoosie Kurtz, Kurtwood Smith, even Burt Reynolds.

Thanks. I haven't seen Sideways yet, but looking for it in the stores. Your description of Laura Dern is quite accurate. My other favorites of hers are "Afterburn" and "Damaged Care". Still, some are not worth watching.
