Well, that's the party line, but I also think his voice had gotten worse over the long haul with Journey. If you listen to some of the later albums he did with them, such as "Raised on Radio," the voice was a lot huskier and throaty. He also comes off as quite the headcase in interviews, so who really knows what's up with him. That said, I really can't blame the other guys for wanting to continue, a la Styx without Dennis DeYoung.

I remember reading a few years ago that Steve Perry had either throat cancer or some other medical condition that had really damaged his voice and he is unable to sing anymore. I agree with you also, Journey with Steve Perry is like Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Another fun band that I really miss.
You look like the Miami Sound Machine just exploded all over you.

It's very sad when people post "answers to things they know NOTHING about!!!" Seriously you guys have it wrong. Just "google" him, or "Journey" & you will get the truth, it's not that hard. There was even an interview & storyline on "Behind the Scenes VH1." Steve didn't have throat cancer, even tho that was one of the rumors., His mother died of cancer. To try & give you the short story, Steve & Journey were getting ready for a big come back, in the mid 90's or so with their newest work, then "Trial By Fire" & the hit single "When You Love A Woman" when Steve was sidelined with a hip injury, trying to make up his mind to go ahead with a hip replacement or try alternative ways to heal. the rest of the group didn't feel they had "time" to wait around & "went on without him."
Steve still has his "hand" in the music industry today. In fact, I'm watching the movie "Monster" with Charlize Theron & Steve was the music consultant.
Without saying, I, am a true fan of Steve Perry & Journey when he was with them.
            (excuse any/all typos)

He had vocal nodes, which had to be removed. With most singers once that happens your high range suffers slightly to dramaticly.

You may really really love journey, but Steve doesn't have a wife and kids. Steve never had throat cancer.
Steve is fine. He went to his ceremony for the star on the Hollywood Walk of fame last year with Journey. They didn't expect him to come, but he was there. And he was fine.
He just sang on a jazz album in 2004, and he sounds perfect. He sang on a Hawaiian album in 2003, good strong voice.
He wants to walk the beach, produce music, and be left alone in privacy.
Wife and kids, that's pretty funny.

That's a bit of an overstatement. Steve delivered some back-up vocals on David Pack's new album. He sounded nice, but it was all done in his low range. He also made an appearance in Chicago recently and hung with the Sox. At their post-game celebratory parade Steve went on stage and attempted to sing "Don't Stop Believing"it was worse than horrid. His high range is toast. Very sad.

I just wanted to say that I think that he looked so good when he was young and with Journey, He was kind of an attractive man. I kind of wish that he was not in his 50's now.

I can't believe all the negative stuff about Steve Perry. Singing like he did for all those years has to have some effect on your voice. Does everyone expect to look the same when they are in their 50's? No matter what he looks or sounds likehe is an amazing musician. He spent as much time as he wanted on tour and now just wants a normal life. It sucks that it had to result in Journey finding a new lead singer. I have actually seen them in concert a few times. I like that he doesn't sound exactly like Steve Perry. That would be creepy. I am just thankful that we all can still have an opportunity to see Journey in concert.

I dont think that I said anything negative.
I think he is a very good singer also. His voice has a very unique sound to it.

What's wrong with him being in his 50s? He's still attractive and talented.
If you're missing the young Stevie, there's plenty of him on DVD and videotape.

I believe it was Bette Davis who said, "Old age ain't for sissies." As someone who is about to hit the half-century mark, trust me when I say that man's still got it goin' on! I've been enjoying the voice and the view for 27 years.
Regarding Journey's new lead, how does anyone get past the fact that he looks like Tiny Tim, as in "Tiptoe Through the Tulips"?
