Yea, Ian McKellen is always going for those sweet roles, the ones where he plays a desirable, sexually powerful, and most significantly a no-more-than middle aged man.
    Oh, wait.
Yeah, I'm sure Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier and a slew of other near geriatrics could be openly gay and not have that limit their ability to play Dumbledore. It might impact their bank ability were they 20 something, and seeking a high mainstream profile.
Page was never going to tick the boxes for mainstream Hollywood regardless of her sexuality - bit parts, niche films, sure. And her being out shouldn't affect that at all.

I don't think it's going to hurt her career, she's going to be able to get the same type of rolls that she got before, unless she black balls herself talking negative against Hollywood.
With Neil Patrick Harris it has hurt his career, which is sad he's a great actor.
Wentworth Miller came out as gay, his career is doing better then it did before.
I guess it's the type of actor you are and the rolls that you want to do.

I don't know if it helped his career but I don't think it hurt him either. If anything he seems to be a much more high-profile celebrity than he was before. Looking at his Wikipedia page it appeared that prior to 'How I Met Your Mother' after Doogie Howser ended the bulk of his stuff was tv movies and guest work whereas now he's doing quite well for himself.

Matt Bomer is also doing pretty well for himself. He came out while on
          White Collar
, I believe, which ran for several series. He won a Golden Globe for
          The Normal Heart
          , is now appearing in
          American Horror Story
, and has a few different film projects lined up. Oh, and he was in the
          Magic Mike
films, but I hesitated to mention that because I thought the first one was frankly terrible (even if it did have a few good-looking guys).

I certainly don't think that coming out as gay would ruin her career. I just read an article on her saying that coming out has allowed her to take on more creative roles.
One thing I will point out: look at her IMDb page pre-2014. She had the X-Men films, Inception and Juno to her name as well as smaller films like Hard Candy and Whip It. Since she came out there doesn't seem to be many films of note other than Freeheld. But I guess it's early days to see whether she won't get any more big films, and as mentioned above, maybe she isn't as interested in doing blockbusters.

She said that many times in the past.
Apparently, it took a lot of convincing by the director to do the X-Men movies.

I'm guessing it might be due to marketing. Hard to sell to focus groups.

Elton John once said that when an actor is gay, there's an issue of credibility in the role they are playing. He didn't think musicians had the same problem.

                    Makes sense.
Of course a teen heart throb goes out the window when they come out, except to young gay men or women.
Cliff's hidden in his closet for decades pretending he just likes masturbating to healthy hetero pornography. But then his fanbase has gone from being bankable teenage single buyers to antique Christmas album purchasers - I guess if he came out now his fans, what there are that haven't died already, would have strokes.
Adam Lambert had a bunch of hits about the time he came out, and I don't recall him putting anything out that jumped to the top 10 since he did. Just like scripts for films, you have to get good songs bought for you, arranged for you etc by people whose major if not only concern is $$$$$.
Give that expensive song, studio time, etc to someone that has sex appeal to maximum 5-10% of the population, or someone that has sex appeal to a maximum 50% I guess explains why unless you are Elton John, or very talented, it does matter.
I saw some rent boy of Eltons doing a terrible duet with him on Grahame Norton about a year ago. So sometimes coming out helps your career, if you take it from Big E5b4l.

It's a power move even your careers in the pooper, just draws attention to you when nobody cares, she's his new role in some super hero flick where she's called the "thor-head" or something, like the old villain rhino in superman, she can bash through anything with her forehead..I dunnoanyways Hollywood's full of pedophiles, homos, lefty loons detached from any kind of reality so I treat them like my pet monkeyJust shut up and entertain me monkey!!

You couldn't possibly need attention this badly.

It's hard to believe the character is straight sometimes when the actor isn't.
Some actors are just so good at playing a straight characters, like Barney from How I met your mother
Ellen Page has the mannerisms of a gay person, when she came out, I wasn't the least bit surprised. For her to play a straight character, it would be hard for me to forget the fact that she's just acting

Not being argumentative here, but what exactly are the mannerisms of a gay person? I know women who act butch but are heterosexual, and I know men who act fem but are heterosexual. I don't really believe in "gaydar", but then I'm not gay myself so maybe I'm missing something.

Her mannerisms tended towards the masculine, particularly her voice, which is quite monotone and matter of fact.
But it wasn't just that, her facial expressions and patterns of movement weren't feminine.
I have worked with alot of lesbians over the years, so it could just be that I've picked up on alot of the subtleties
