When Academy members vote for performers, it's a little like voting for a prom queen in high school. It's not like it's actually the prettiest girl who wins, it's usually the person running who's the most POPULAR.
Ryan was primarily known as a New York stage actress when she was nominated. The vote was also split because Ruby Dee, a popular actress who also figured in the Civil Rights Movement, was nominated. After the votes got spread out, Tilda Swinton had the edge simply because she'd been around longer (i.e., had worked with more voters) while consistently giving solid performances.
Oscars are often given for cumulative work, or years of building up good will. I think that's what happened the year Ryan was nominated, because technically, her performance is amazing. There's not a single moment that could be better, and it's a VERY demanding role.

That's just one facial expression, not representative of what she looked like overall.

i know, i've seen the movie and it's one of the reasons i love Amy Ryan, but throughout the whole movie, including that scene, just not her best look but it fit the part, so

She looked very white trash, but her face didn't look any different from what it normally looks like.

I said her look, not just her face but her whole look in the movie was not her best look. Her look in that scene all slumped down in the couch drunk and high with Dottie particularly was not a good look for her. Get it?

I hadn't seen GBG at the time the Oscars were telecast and I had never heard of Amy Ryan. The little Oscar clip they showed of her made me seek out and watch this terrific film. I saw Michael Clayton, and Ryan was robbed!

I haven't seen Michael Clayton but Tilda is a very good actress though. I thought Amy was great in GBG.

She was really good in GBG, but it's hard to out do Tilda in Michael Clayton.

I don't remember Tilda's performance in MC at all, while Amy's performance in GBG is still fresh and vivid in my mind. Brilliant work.

However, she failed to win any of the major awards, so by the time the Oscars rolled around Tilda Swinton was favored to win, because she was her movie's best chance for an Oscar.
