Uh,"pass for another race"? The man is black, and that's obviously what he culturally relates to the most. Like another poster said, black people come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. Some white folks kill me thinking that just because someone dosen't immediately register with then as being what they think a black person should look and act like, that they must be white or identify as white. That's obviously not always the case.

chill, maybe his name had something to do with it. i mean, with a name like Daniel Sunjata Condon, you're bound to have questions asked about your ethnicity.

C'mon showgurls. Not all questions are malicious.
I'm also curious to know what makes people's skin. Being curious does not make anyone judgmental
That said, I'd love to see more of Sunjata on screen. He is up next week in Devil Wears Prada. I am definitely going. Beyond being athletic and handsome, he is such an underrated talent, and has starred in Broadway plays too. I hope he'll make many more of us curious!

I'm a mulatto, (half african half german) and we are not "light skinned black people". We have a unique culture and identity.

Why on earth does being knowledgeable and proud of her/his German racial/ethnic and cultural heritage make her/him a "sell out"? Why can s/he only embrace the African side to her/himself, and not the German side?

Ignorant ass. Even back in slave time mixed race individuals were called Mulattos. And to top it off WE are fast becoming the majority. 😛

"Mulattos"? Honestly, that is an old,worn-out outdated term from slavery which means in French "half-mule". That was what they called mixed-race slaves meaning they were only considered half-human because they were part-black. Nothing complimentary about that at all. That's why I don't understand why people even still use that word-it's a term that's been well past its expiration date for some time. Basically, it's an outdated racist term that no longer has any use or relevance in today's societyit needs to be retired (like the n-word) with the quickness.

Some of you guys need to lighten up. This is a legitimate question. In "Rescue Me", Daniel Sunjata plays a Puerto Rican New Yorker, but he really doesn't look like the typical Hispanic most people are familiar with encountering.
Is it so wrong to be curious about someone's physical appearance? Perhaps, if we ask these questions about a person such as Daniel and find out that he truly is Hisapnic, it will educate.
Your politcal correctness is so tiresome.

I wasnt going to respond, but I believe I need to explain why I asked that question. Look, I don't see this question on white actor's boards. Also don't tell me to lighten up! It was a legit question. I want to know does it make people feel better if a "black" actor has a little something more in them? What's up with this mulatto fascination? Do people look up the ethnicity so they can feel a bond with the actor? Or do whites ask this question so they can feel ok about liking black actors. Look, I am just throwing some questions out there. I am not a racist so dont even think of calling me one. But as a light skinned black person this question gets a little tired. Asians must feel the same when people ask whether they are Chinese or Japanese. I will be happy when we as a society can stop talking about ethnicity. Just enjoy the mans work!

Jeeze! Take a chill pill! People want to know coz he's HOT! You're right, we try to figure out the ethnicity so that we can bond with them. You gotta look at the big picture thoughit's not always about blacks and whites. Beyonce, she has some French and Native American blood in her, the French and Native American can therefore claim that she's one of them. They can tell the kids that one of them made it in Hollywod. Prince has some Italian blood in him, Italians can claim him too. Derek Jeter, Mariah Carey, etc. It's not about the skin color coz you and I both know that there are black French and black Italians. It's about identifying yourself with someone and being proud of them coz THEY MADE it. BTW, does anybody know what John Legend's ethnicity is? Maybe we Asians can claim him as part AsianHe's really hot!

No you chill. I dont need a speech about how you want to bond with a actor due to their ethnicity. That is so stupid! Oh I want to bond with Denzel because he is black?!!!!? Please! I can give a rat's a about a person's ethnic background! I bond with a person due to their work. I asked a simple question. If you knew where I was comming from (and you dont) then you would know why I asked that question. So you chill OUT! Like I said the world believes the lighter the better! If you were an African American and you grew up in an African American environment you would know this! Why do you think Beyonce is everyone's favorite? Heck there are millions of other black females who look like her. Dang! People act like she was built in a lab. Her ethnic background is no different than mine or any other black person. She just happened to come out lighter. But if it makes people feel better to say she has French and Indian in her to accept her, then go ahead. Knock yourself out! I was simply making a point. I am so tired of this crap and I wish people would move on from race and talk about something else. Heck, bring the troops home! Lower Gas Prices! By the way lets get back to real point of this board, to praise the work of Daniel Sunjate! I am finished with this topic. There are more important things in the world and I am not responding to anymore of this crap. You people are too sensitve.

How can you bond with people due to their work when all you see are colors/shades (black, white, light, dark). BTW, you started the issue on race when you mentioned colors. The person who started the thread simply wanted to know his ethnic background. Ethnicity and race are 2 totally different things. It's okay if you don't give a "rat's a about a person's ethnic background". That's your perogative (and your loss) coz there's a lot to learn from other people's cultures. It may seem stupid to you but some people are actually proud of their ethnic backgrounds and when someone from the same "ethnic group" becomes famous, they actually show pride in it. Take for example the World Cup. Blacks, whites, latinos, hispanics, asians They may belong in those "check boxes" but they carry different flags.

Sounds like you're a little bitter there showgurls. I've been asked that same question thousands of times since I was a little girl and to this day, I don't mind it. It's better than people just assuming. At least they're curious. And for your information, I don't care what someone's skin color is (black, white, pink, green or neon blue), I was to know their ethnic background. I find it fascinating, as do lots of other people. So stop hating.
