      He wasn't offered the job. He was Rolwing's choice to direct the first movie, but the producers didn't want him because of his reputation and financial disappointments.

            I used to think that, but as he co wrote the screenplay, and I didn't like the screenplay, I'm not so sure anymore.

              It's a crime. He was the go-to guy for this franchise. Would've been so amazing. All the what-ifs here just make me sad.

                I've never understood why people think Del Toro's Hobbit would've been so great, the man himself admitted that he doesn't care for sword and sorcery / high adventure fiction. His version would've looked pretty, no doubt, but the tone of the story would probably feel more Lovecraftian than Tolkien.
