He wasn't always a good guy.Check out "Behind the Mask (1932)".
He was an excellent bad guy.

I notice horror buff and author the late Denis Gifford refers to him as "..old Van Sloan" in Dracula when he was in fact 48. Like David Manners, a rather unsung Universal classic monsters hero

Love this guy as Van Helsing in Dracula. He played that part with great conviction and authority.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
