Fans were shocked when they learned that Charisma Carpenter, who stars in this weekend's ABC Family movieSee Jane Date,'' would not be returning to the WB'sAngel'' for the show's fifth season.
The actress - who played the hilariously frank Cordelia Chase for three seasons onBuffy the Vampire Slayer'' and for four onAngel'' - was equally stunned.
I was not prepared,'' Carpenter said in a phone interview.I don't think you're ever prepared for that kind of situation. Seven years, that's a long time. I started that show. To not be finishing it is a pretty big deal for me. They went back to work on July 24 . . . On that day I thought,Oh, today is officially my first day of unemployment.' '' Last spring, Carpenter returned to ``Angel'' just 10 days after giving birth to her son, Donovan, and spent two long days on the set, wrapping up the season. She said she is absolutely willing to return to the series to provide closure to her character's story arc and bring the beloved Cordy out of the coma in which she remained during last season's finale. ``I think it would be incomplete if it wasn't addressed but I don't know what's being planned,'' she said. ``I haven't heard anything. As we speak today, there are no plans for me to come back.'' She has not talked with series co-creator and executive producer Joss Whedon why Cordelia will not be working at Wolfram & Hart with the rest of the gang in the fall. ``I haven't had that discussion with Joss. It's really none of my business, actually. I'm sure as far as storytelling goes, he will not disappoint. He wants what's best for his fans. ``It's obviously going to take adjusting,'' she said. ``It's sad in some aspects and very exciting in others. Working with the same people for so long, you feel safe in your exploration of a character, but it's really exc5b4iting to work with a different group of people and wonder,What's my next assignment?'Angel' andBuffy' are so special to me. None of the things that happen to me from now on would be possible without the experience onBuffy' andAngel.' I'd never be able to carry my own show.''
As the delightful title character inSee Jane Date'' (premiering tomorrow night at 8 on ABC Family), Carpenter does indeed carry the show. The No. 1 reason I wanted to do this movie was that I was very drawn to the character and the genre itself. I've always wanted to do a romantic comedy,'' Carpenter said.I did not expect to work so soon. I saw the material and I fell in love. I thought, `Oh my God, I've definitely got to do this.' '' So Carpenter, her husband and their 2-month-old son set off for Montreal. As a new mother, it was so confidence-inspiring,'' she said.If I can carry a show and be breast-feeding every three hours, I can pretty much do anything. The producers were very, very accommodating. There was nothing but support.'' Carpenter especially loved the opportunity to do comedy once again.Cordelia was always kind of the light onAngel,' and then that kind of changed in the last two seasons. It got kind of darker.'' Carpenter said her dream would be to do a sitcom - ``Sitcoms are conducive to being a mom'' - and any fan of ``Buffy'' or ``Angel'' knows Carpenter is very, very funn1c84y. It's a talent she credits ``Angel'' executive producer David Greenwalt with cultivating. ``He really made an effort. I didn't know I could do comedy. David said,You know, you're funny.' He continually developed quality work.''
Next up for Carpenter is a guest starring role on NBC's new seriesMiss Match,'' starring Alicia Silverstone and Ryan O'Neal. At the table read, she heard a familiar voice, turned around and saw O'Neal. He's an icon in so many ways - to work with him on a peer level, it's kind of spectacular.''
As the now-4-month-old Donovan cooed in the background, Carpenter said simply, ``It's good times right now.''

Since she returned to work after giving birth, she obviously wasn't fired for being pregnant.
Thanks for clearing that up.

She was on a contract for appearances, she filled her obligation. All she did for the rest of season four was lay there as if she were in a coma. Not much work was put into that.

You'll have to explain how that proves she was fired for being pregnant.

You'll have to explain how that proves she was fired for being pregnant.
Her pregnancy meant a major re-write for season four as opposed to the season four that they had scheduled. Whedon (grudgingly) re-wrote season for because of Charisma's pregnancy, and he got in a huff when she told him about it(apparently at an inopportune time) thereby forcing the change to accommodate her pregnancy. When she returned, she found out all Cordelia was going to be was in a coma thereby creating more conflict between the two.
She wasn't even supposed to appear in the one episode she was in during season five. That was her 'doing it for the fans' so to speak since she and Whedon were still on the outs at that point. "You're Welcome" in season five was actually supposed to guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy but she declined thus the switch to end Cordelia's story and why there was a Fake Shemp Buffy in the episode "The Girl in Question".

Source? Because it sounds like pure speculation.

Bullsh!t. You 're just LAZY and just want to believe what you want to instead of seeking it out for yourself. It's all on Youtube in multiple videos and since you're such a fan, the account has been chronicled at length on multiple sites. But just be the contrarian bitch that you wanna be.

Eddie's quick with the personal attacks.
I've never understood why people think personal attacks are effective. Of course, I've never understood the appeal of trolling.

Oh, so you ladies are a tag-team now. You'd think for people who worship Whedon so heavily, you'd be caught up on a subject like this.

Oh, so you ladies a7ecre a tag-team now.
You think being called a lady is an insult? No wonder you have a problem with Joss. You're still stuck in caveman times. Gonna call me gay, next?
Welcome to the 21st century, son. Join us? You'll like it here. We've got Iphones, blu rays, streaming video, and all kinds of neat stuff.
You'd think for people who worship Whedon so heavily, you'd be caught up on a subject like this.
So, that implies you're even more obsessed with Joss than us, right? Since you know so much more about what's going on with him.
Can't stop the signal. -

I totally understand. You can't back up your claim so you attack me instead.
You're lazy. I can't help you with that. And the fact that you're here, like 24/7 definitely says you have no life outside these message boards whatsoever. You'd think someone with so much time on their hands would actually do the research. Silly me for talking sense to a Whedon apologist.

You got to love it when a post is edited after someone has replied.

It appears you post here more often than I do.
You'd think someone with so much time on their hands would actually do the research.
You'd think so, but for some reason you don't. Or perhaps you just can't back up your claim.
Silly me for talking sense to a Whedon apologist.
Interesting comment. Nothing you've posted could be called "talking sense" and I'm certainly not a "Whedon apologist".

Charisma's firing was due to two things. Or two primary things.
First, she requested - and received - an extended leave of absence in Season Three that required extensive rewriting of the last 6 or so episodes of the season. She returned at the end and they had extensive plans for her in Season Four.
Second, she returned in Season Four, but pregnant. She did not tell them she was pregnant until she was pretty far along. As a result, they had to first write her out of Season Four as planned (it involved her being a lot more of an action character, which they had been building up to in Season Three before she left for her hiatus - she did a lot of training with Angel). Then, they had to write her back in, only pregnant. So she essentially messed up the planning of a season and a half of the show.
I loved Cordy, but I completely understand why they had to fire her. You have to have cast members you can depend on. They gave her a break in Season Three, despite the fact that her sudden departure weakened what had been the strongest season of ANGEL. Instead of enhancing the show, she was off with the Grosalog (or however it is spelled) on a vacation.
I thought if anything they went out of their way to sort of patch things up with her, by having her Season Five farewell episode. I was intensely angry Cordy left the show, but my anger was directed at Charisma. She shouldn't have taken time off in Season Three and she should have told Whedon she was pregnant the second she found out.
I am, by the way, about halfway through writing my second book on Whedon (I was the main editor of THE JOSS WHEDON COMPANION, the first book that attempted a comprehensive survey of the entirety of Joss Whedon's career, including his TV, comics, film, and other work) and am trying to decide how much of stuff like this to put into it. It is more of a thematic dictionary (so there will be articles on things like Personal Redemption in his various projects, but I don't think I'll do an exhaustive listing of characters. If you look at THE JOSS WHEDON COMPANION and look at my essays (I have three in all, though I either chose or solicited or in a couple of instances extensively rewrote all the essays in the book [one of the more interesting articles in the book was by someone else, but their prose was so bad I spent over 30 hours rewriting it - I thought the essay was too good to leave out, but not up to snuff as it stood]). Right now I think I'll not put any of the more gossipy stuff I know about, but might mention that "conflicts" led to a decreasing involvement of Charisma in the show. My one big regret with the book is that I had submitted a wish list of people I'd like to have interviewed, but was too big of a coward to actually interview anyone. Luckily a major Whedon scholar, who had not previously done interviews either, took it on with most of the early interviews and did just a killer job. Originally the interview with Harry Groener (The Mayor) was supposed to be about 15 minutes, and his agent didn't want it to be that long. But she did such a killer job that Groener allowed the clock to go way over 30 minutes, and the result was a great interview. We also had an interview with Monica Baccarin that was unusable. We wanted something substantial, but her agent was arranging 5 minute interview leading up to that really bad SF show she was on. I didn't even considering including it in the book. I'm so glad that HOMELAND and GOTHAM gave her some great work. I still have hope that she'll turn out to be the original Wasp on ANT-MAN. It could happen! If they found a way of pulling her out of that quantum whatever she is stuck in, she could play the mother of the Evangeline Lilly Wasp (assuming that they weren't just teasing us in the film).
