On a steep hill it should roll almost instantly. How not notice the car rolling. Also why would you put in neutral, that

The Jeep he had had a known problem, the gear shift, when put into Park, would sometimes actually be in Neutral instead, or so I read.
Also, a vehicle doesn't necessarily start rolling in an instant if it is on a slight slope, and hardly makes any noise, so if he had his back to it, it could've conceivably hit him without Yelchin noticing it at all.
For people who have commented that maybe it was suicide, I hope they weren't serious, as that's ridiculous.
I laugh in the face of danger, then I hide until it goes away. -

Thank you! I was about to type pretty much the same thing when I came across your comment. I also love that people immediately point to drugs or alcohol too. Why can't this just be a freak accident and nothing more?

He was probably doing what most people would do when checking the mail. Standing there sifting through it to see what is useful and what is junk. Everyone checks what they got standing right by the mailbox. And as far as the neutral thing apparently it was a huge issue with that car. A lot of people didn't realize it was not in neutral. That is why it was being recalled.

Not really. I stopped my Jeep Wrangler, put it in neutral (it is a manual transmission) for our street is flat (at least I thought so). I got out to check something across the drive and the next thing I heard was a bump. It had run into our mailbox and we have a steel post. Damaged the front bumper where, if you have seen the Jeeps, has two plastic bumps in front. It hit right on the driver side one. I was so stupid and passed. But I found one on Amazon for only $100 and my husband, complaining to me for it is not as an easy task as you would thing, changed it out. I never heard the dang thing until it hit.
