The film starts shooting in September, probably won't be released until late 2018, so I wouldn't worry. Anyway, it's an uplifting, vibrant story that I'm sure lot's of people will watch on the big screen.

Exactly what i was thinking, it seems like an amazing project, but really risky, especially because she is playing another immigrant and its set in Africa and she is white, I can see a lot of backlash for this.

I'll buy the book tomorrow Poetswan and give my impressions of it soon. BTW, I don't want to distract from this fresh piece of news, but I noticed in an article that La La land opened in Brazil on the 16th or 17th. Have you seen it yet?

Oh yes Steve, I went to see it and I freaking loved it! I had so much fun while watching, incredible direction, all those shots without cutting were expertly handled
Super catchy songs, my favorite being another day in the sun (especially for its instrumental tune), Ryan and Emma with their huge charisma and likeability, gave moving performances. I think what I liked the most were the references to all the musicals from the past, for me it didn't seem like he was just copying, but instead paying a beautiful homage while at the same time disconstructing it all at the end. My only quibble was the choreography, I am no expert in dancing, but to me it felt too unnatural, its like I could hear they counting the steps while doing it, especially in the lovely night sequence, of course Emma and Ryan are no professional dancers so that was just a minor thing for me.
I am quite happy its winning a lot of awards, but I have yet to see most of the big movies, like Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Hidden Figures and Fences.
Did you like it too? And have you seen Nocturnal Animals? Probably my second favorite movie, after La La Land, from the ones i've seen this year.

That's a sophisticated take on the film Poetswan. When considering the genre form, my instinct is to give credit to the young director partly because of the obvious passion we all could see up there on the big screen. No one can reinvent the wheel in this regard. When you get a chance, read the sourpuss review from Rex Reed. I don't believe he truly understood how the director loves this genre and indeed built upon and borrowed from the greats of the past. There is nothing wrong with that. BTW, props to Harvard University for educating both the director and the young composer.
I think the dancing was meant to represent the characters as regular people along with the singing. We are aware they're not great dancers nor singers, but in this case it helps reinforce the sense that these are "real", regular people and not iconic and slick dancing-type legends of yore.
Nearly ever year, I tend to fall in love with one film. This was the one for me in 2016-2017. The last ten minutes kind of sealed the deal for me. It's a perfect genre to use a stunning montage to not only wrap up the story but give it a powerful emotional afterglow.
I've seen everything that is in contention and films not getting the awards' buzz. I'll admit I stayed away from most of the blockbuster stuff I consider basic popcorn. I've been losing interest in those kinds of films the past few years.
I also loved Nocturnal Animals. Manchester was very powerful but so different from La La Land. Fences was IMO beautifully adapted from the stage and had outstanding performances. Moonlight was intimate and intense. Hidden Figures was very well made and satisfying partly because it told an important story of three exceptional women. Hell or High Water was one of the best during the entire year, and A Monster Calls bombed at 7ecthe box office but was so well crafted.

Ronan's character Lilly, is actually a refugee, not an immigrant. There's a difference.

Hmm. Yeah, there has been some criticism online already. But I'll check out the book next week.
Anyway, this kinda speaks, again, to how name directors aren't really flocking to work with her. This seems to be a very indie project, once again. I'm fine with her picking lowkey films, but at least work with directors that have SOME significant reputation/critical success. She/her team can't seem to accomplish that. The script writer is an unknown too, so ehhh. Sounds like a good role that's within her wheelhouse, but I hope it's not another Brooklyn-like character.
So what does this mean for MQOS? Does she have room to start filming that one first half of the year? Or was that another false alarm.. Assuming it ever gets off, it will probably take two/three months or so?

''Sweetness in the Belly'' won't be released for a year or two, so I wouldn't worry about the small amount of criticism from silly trolls. Also, this project starts shooting in September, leaving her plenty of time to shoot ''Mary Queen of Scots'' and others.

Yes I'm hoping everyday for MQOS. About the "backlash" (and this seems like the best recipe for social media debates: just look at Scorsese's Silence) I'm looking through the book reviews and I haven't read any glaring criticisms about the lead character (and if it's truly a white savior role). Mostly some just criticizing its simplistic take on the culture? I think is more in the vein of romance like last year's A United Kingdom.

From the recent reporting, MQOS really seems like a go. Most likely it'll start shooting within the next couple of months. I'm psyched for it.
I checked with Barnes and Noble today, and the lady told me it wasn't in stock. So, I ordered it for pickup soon. I'll have to do research to get a feel for those involved in scriptwriting and of course the director. She is continuing to gravitate toward material that's compelling to her even if the main players behind the scenes are not well known and established talents. I'm not referring to the producers.
If I'd a better knowledge of the industry, then perhaps I could put forward a cogent case as to why she isn't working with big time directors at this time. Crowley is very talented, but I'm referring to those titans considered the cream of the crop. It's not like we're the only ones who realize how extraordinarily gifted she is as a film actress. My God, those Brooklyn reviews were incredible across the board. I just listened to Mark Kermode of the BBC last night once again and marveled at how gobsmacked he was when describing her talent.

I'm just wondering will she star in ''The Goldfinch''? I can't imagine Crowley not bringing her on-broad!

That would definitely qualify as a big studio role. Here's hoping.

She'll be contracted to do press for ''On Chesil Beach'', ''LadyBird'' & ''Loving Vincent''. ''On Chesil Beach'' & ''Loving Vincent'' are both awards season contenders, so it's likely she will be campaigning too.
