Armie does ok with a strong lead actor.
MFU didn't go anywhere because Henry Cavill is not a strong lead actor so, with Armie in tow, it was two "meh" guys leading a movie. Miraculously, the movie still turned out to be entertaining but didn't get a strong buzz because there were no standout performances and nowadays a movie needs dynamic performances to get a mention in the press.
But, I agree, Armie cannot carry a movie right now. Interesting because he comes across energetic (almost exuberant) in interviews but flat onscreen. I think he needs to change up his look a bit too; the Ken doll-blonde hair with the pretty boy face makes him come across boring. -

He's just a wooden guy like Ben Affleck. Both are great in small support roles or ensembles (Affleck in Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, the Town) but fall apart when asked to carry a movie.
There just doesn't seem like there is much going on upstairs. Like with Matt Damon (who admittedly doesn't quite have the leading man looks of Affleck or Hammer) you can see the wheels churning when he acts. -

I actually disagree about Hammer having leading man looks. He's handsome but very generically-handsome; in a way that's not interesting to look at and looks flat onscreen. He needs a makeover. He needs to go back to dark hair or even the black hair he had in "Blackout"; he looked much more interesting and even had some earrings, which looked hot on him. I actually thought he was a hot latino guy the first time I saw the movie. And he needs a different look; he looks like someone's dad (which he is) but he's a young guy.

"generically handsome" is practically the definition of leading man looks. I thought Hammer looked uber-hot in
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
I hardly even noticed Henry Cavill when Hammer was onscreen.

No, he phoned it in again. The lone ranger sucked because one sorry but who is armies hammer. They kept saying his name when it advertised on TV. You would think it would have got more buzz with all the promos and johnny depp. Second I saw his character tonto and he looked like jack sparrow except no pirate hat or shirt, people get sick of seeing the same character rehashed which is where johnny depp went this time. He is known more now for his quirky roles and it seems he takes what other actors pass on thinking he will kill the role but it doesn't happen anymore.

I too enjoyed his performance as Ilya. I thought he was the best part of the film. I haven't seen
The Lone Ranger
and am in no big hurry to do so, but it will be interesting to see how Hammer develops as an actor in future roles. And I wouldn't mind seeing him in a sequel to
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
