Her Name is Maude?

The Simpsons didn't come up with the name 'Maude'. That name has been around since way before The Simpsons and I doubt the character in that silly show is what inspired her parents to name her that. Either way, the name sucks, in my opinion. Nobody's named their kid that since like1901, probably. It's very old-fashioned and not at all suiting for a kid in THIS century.

This is especially for the userRonin008who initially posted this negative message board comment that spawned the thread in which the two usersSharon-17 and Micahh-01posted subsequent replies
What a bunch of small-minded people all of you are!
For your information, I gave my lovely daughter the name of Maude. She was born in January 2011. And my husband and I both think it's the very best name that we could have given her. It's original, dignified, distinctive, and, in my opinion absolutely beautiful. Our friends and family all adore it and as she has grown and continues to develop her feisty, funny, and intelligent personality, it suits her more and more.
And when I first thought of the name Maude for her while she was still in utero, I hadn't even been aware at that time that it was also the first name of this young actressMs. Apatow. And I had even seen her previous film 'Knocked Up' way before getting pregnant. So I was actually very pleased to realize, when seeing 'This is 40' (which I loved even more than 'Knocked Up,' by the way), that my daughter and this gifted young lady shared the same name.
And why the name Maude? Well why not??? The meaning of the name itself is "strength in battle" or per Wikipedia"powerful battler." Which I loved, because I get this amazing picture in my head of this midieval warrior woman bravely leading a huge army, clad in ornate armour, holding a shield and sword, and charging bravely against the enemy. Plus, there were some other key reasons why my husband and I agreed on this name of French-Germanic origin
1.) Maude Lebowski is the name of the great Julianne Moore's hilariously droll character in t2000he Coen Brothers' brilliantly funny film'The Big Lebowski'which is one of my husband's and my very favorite movies that we first saw when we were in the very first years of our relationship. So her name honors that fact something that is enjoyed by both of her parents.
2.) Maude was the name of Bea Arthur's very strong, outspoken, and feminist character in the early 1970s TV show of the same name that I remember seeing on TV as a young child and affectionately thinking at that time that she so closely resembled my grandmothernow sadly departedin looks and personality. So in a way, her name honors my grandmother's memory in that way.
3.) And yes as a couple of the other users on this thread so astutely pointed out, 'Harold and Maude' was a wonderful movie from 1971 that starred the terrific actress, Ruth Gordon, as Maude a quite spirited and loveable old lady.
And speaking of "old ladies" and this is specifically for the userSharon-17
WHAT exactly, in your opinion, is so "ugly" and "awful" about the name Maude??? And even if it does seem like an "old-lady name," WHAT is this negative association you have with old ladies anyway?!? Someday if we're lucky enough to live that long, you (if you are indeed a woman as your IMDB user name indicates), me, every one of your friends/peers of the same gender, your daughter or daughters (if you have any) are going to become old ladies. Your beloved female family members will too that is, if they aren't already. And if they are of an elderly age now, then I hope you are showing them respect and kindness. Most "old ladies" have a lot of wisdom and experience to share with those who are willing to listen. I would deem that as being a very positive attribute. And oh yeah in case you haven't noticed, the "old lady names" have been making quite a comeback as of late in our culture. All you have to do is Google "Old Lady Baby Names" and you'll see. Names like Mabel, Helen, and Stella. And the name of actress Michelle Williams' and deceased actor Heath Ledger's daughterMatilda? Maude is a variant of that name.
Along that same vein, I have a girlfriend who has loved my daughter and her name from the get-go practically swooning over her name! I come to find out that her beloved grandmother who has been long-deceased was named Maude. I was humbled and honored by this realization.
And although I hadn't remembered that the name of Ned Flanders' wife on 'The Simpsons' was named Maude, I was also amused and pleased to be enlightened as such because I love that show and all of its comedic cleverness and irreverence. Even if she WAS a "bible beater!" I think that Ned Flanders and all his overly optimistic religiousness and his two awkward goody-two-shoes kids are all utterly hilarious.
And if any of you have any doubt that the name Maude can encompass someone of outward physical beauty, check out photos of the Swedish actress, Maud Adams. She was quite the looker in her prime. She was even a "Bond Girl," after all. Not that that really carries a lot of weight with me personally, but it's a great example of a physically beautiful person having what you all think is an "ugly" name that "sucks" that only "cruel parents" would bestow upon a child.
And finally for Micahh-01, who thinks that the name "sucks" and that "Nobody's named their kid that since like19 -

Well said, Domenica! I loved this actresses' name the first time I heard it because it reminded me of Ruth Gordon's strong character in Harold and Maude; my favorite movie. I always assumed that her parents chose this name as a nod to the movie. If I had a daughter I would seriously consider naming her Maude. (even though as kids we used to call my aunt "Maude", after the Bea Arthur character because of her big, gray5b4 bouffant! lol.)
BTW, I also used to work with a woman named Domenica and I always liked that name, too! -

These people have obviously never travelled, hence their small minded ness. I live in West Germany and Maude is a common name here, and is not seen as 'an old lady name'. Americans think that the whole world should follow their prompt in ideology and trends.

What a petty thing to say. People are named what they are because it means something to their parents. You're pretty shallow & clearly a jerk for picking on/bullying someone based on a name.
But she'll have the last laugh anyway as you come up w insignificant things to complain about on a board, she'll be starring in films. Get a life weirdo -

I think of the Bea Arthur show, when I hear the name Maude. BUt, maybe it's an Apatow family name. It's hardly a cruel thing, to do. Names are very personal, obviously I always think, it's better to have a unique name, than a wildly popular name, like Michael, Jennifer, etc.. I grew up with a very popular name, and in each class, I always had atleast 3 other classmates with the same name. I hated that. Anway, sometimes children do not like their names, but when they get older, they appreciate it I think JUdd is a cool, name too

Maude isn't a good name for this decade and sounds very old-fashioned. But at least her parents didn't name her "Audio Science" or more famously, "Apple" loving your kids does not necessarily mean giving them crazy names to confuse other people.

It reminds me in modern family when Cam and Gloria are looking for Jay's dog and they find that a little girl has it. Cam asks her name and she says "my name is Blanch", and Cam says to her "shut up!!!" In shock at how old fashioned her name was.

Judd said he grew up watching the great Norman Lear tv show Maude starring Bea Arthur (who totally rocks)! He lived that show and named her after Maude. That character in the 70's was a groundbreaking role for women and the women's movement! Harold & Maude is also my all time favorite comedy and it's a cute name.
She's such a mature actress and that's why the name fits well.
