or is it mainstream? either way it's a classic and a masterpiece.

You can probably title it under a "cult classic" these days, as I believe the years have been kind to the film. The Stepford Wives was modestly successful during its initial release, but wasn't a huge hit on par with previous cinematic adaptations of Ira Levin novels. Which was what the studio was hoping for im sure.
Its not a film that has enjoyed numerous re-releases on dvd, bluray, like other films, so its very much a cult classic as it certainly has its place, but I wouldn't go as far as claiming the film is mainstream.
I really feel sorry for anyone who watched only the Nicole Kidman version and not this one. Talk about "missing out"! -

"the years have been kind to the film." it's very entertaining even to me who is a gen x person which is very impressive. so it's not a usual slow moving '70s movie, it's entertaining all the way through, that's why it holds up so well according to my film likes.

Yeah, I remember buying the dvd of the original shortly before the Nicole Kidman version was released in theaters. Which obviously pales in comparison to the subtlety nuisances of the 70s cult classic.
About the best thing I liked about the Nicole Kidman reboot of The Stepford Wives was the teaser trailer. I'm not sure if the film itself really had a specific identity? As some of the Stepford wives seemed simply hypnotized, while others came across as actual cyborgs.
I remember reading somewhere that some people involved with the reboot were under the impression that the film would be akin to the psychological thriller the original was, while others thought the film was going to be an outright comedy.
Apparently, this confusion carried over to the film itself.
Thankfully, the original was MUCH more focused and CLEARLY the better film by a mile! -

i was so ticked off when i saw they remade it that i couldn't stand it.
it's yet another "cash grab easy money remake of a classic film so lets **** on the original film by making a completely unnecessary and not anywhere close to as great of a film as the original film bc it's impossible to make a remake as great as the original film film.
and you know what they also remade robocop, ghostbusters, footloose, and a nightmare on elm street. all movies that can not be remade bc it's impossible for them to be any better which should be the only reason a remake is made, can it be better than the original.
lukejbarnett -
lukejbarnett — 4 years ago(June 22, 2021 03:35 PM)
you should also avoid the remake of the stepford wives bc it can't be better than the original.
apparently i just heard this from my sister. one of her all time favorite films the princess bride, filmmakers were working on a remake of it. this better not happen ever.
my sister made a funny line about this that she read on a website about this remake. someone make a reference to a line in this film about the remake. it was "it would be a waste of a perfect film, in reference to the line, it would be a waste of perfect breasts," a line made about princess buttercups's tits.
it's interesting how she views a remake of a film as making it worse for her and the original film. a remake if you really think about it does nothing to the original film. it just makes us resent the remake, and the existence of the remake bc to us, the loyal fan of the original, it shouldn't exist.
i can't believe they remade the texas chainsaw massacre and black christmas and the last house on the left and i spit on your grave and the hills have eyes. i really could go on and on listing all these horror movie classics that they had no right to make remakes of.
the only horror film that has been made since 2003 that should have been made is silent night, but it want' a remake it was just a tribute movie bc it wasn't like the original at all, it just has a very similar tribute to the deer antler impaling linnea quigley scene.
you really have to watch the most comprehensive and very informative documentary in search of darkness. you can watch it for free on this website. just look up this documentary and click on the video for it.
the filmmakers of classic horror films made in the '80s take the time to talk about almost every important horror movie made in the '80s, film by film, year by year.

The remake of The Hills Have Eyes is pretty good, I must say, but it still pales in comparison to the original film. -
lukejbarnett — 4 years ago(June 25, 2021 06:08 AM)
but that's my point. it's a losing cause making a remake of a classic film bc you are going against all the fans of the original so you have to win them over which for some people is impossible to do.
also with some films my friend just said today that remaking ghostbusters is very very hard to do bc there is a 1% chance that the remake is better than the original.
so you have to do a test screening of the remake and see if audiences love it before you complete it. the original film is a perfect film. it has perfect casting, a unique and original story, prefect and very memorable acting by all the actors, there is not a weak acting part and not a performance that you think could be better if played by another actor.
so if a movie can't be improved upon it should never be remade and ghostbusters can't be made better so it shouldn't have been remade. also my friend said this remake damages and tarnishes the original film by it's existing bc from now on we live in a world in which has the original film, a classic film and the stupid and wrong remake. also he said the remake is an inferior product to the original film in the same way that the wnba is an inferior league to the nba.
i said having these 2 movies in the world is like being made the best gourmet meal in the world and getting fed this food and being full and then being given a generic hamburger from mcdonald's and then having to eat it so over eating when you don't need to eat it. so we have 2 movies and only one is necessary to watch. we don't need the remake and we shouldn't have the remake bc it's unnecessary bc it's not as good as the original.
movies are about giving us something we've never seen before. so to make a remake is starting off as a bad idea inherently it only becomes necessary if you can make it better than the original.
then the hills have eyes remake shouldn't have ever been made.
now what did you think of piranha(2010) which was directed by the same director who directed the remake of the hills have eyes, alexandre aja? my gosh this film is amazing. even if it's a remake of one of my all time favorite films piranha (1978)directed by joe dante i would be ok with that bc this film piranha(2010) is technically one of the best horror films and films ever made.
this film has a greatness in technical aspects: makeup effects, digital effects, acting, directing, story, pacing, tone, sound that is remarkable and truly astounding.
it puts you at the heart of this meltdown, this emergency that is happening on this beach area to all these people in a way that is unnerving and really realistic. in this way it is like jaws, where you feel this is a big and dangerous problem we have with people being in danger of their lives.
it puts you there in the massacre part of this film in the last about 30 minutes. i've never seen anything like the massacre that happens in this last part of this film. it is on a movie scale that i've never seen before. i've never seen so many people getting chewed apart, body parts half there and 100 people mangled and half their body being ripped apart.
and all of this part is done in the most realistic way that i've ever seen in a horror film. all the cries, all the noises of pain, all the sounds of them trying to get away from the piranhas.
did you actually watch the joke that is the black christmas remake? my gosh what a ****ing horrible movie and it ****s no the original by being horribly bad which is horrible and inexcusable. it's basically just a i know what you did last summer kind of movie, well that's what it looks like the in trailer anyway.
i cant' believe andrea martin stooped so low as to act in this movie when she was in the original film. she lost all my respect by acting in the remake.
did you like the texas chainsaw massacre remake or the i spit on your grave remake or the the last house on the left remake?

I agree with all of that. However, the studios and producers that are raking in all of the cash don't care. They just want to see profit so all of the classics seem to be getting remade these days. Also, a lot of young people might think the original films are outdated and prefer a "modern" version of said film.
Thankfully, Jaws is one classic that has never been remade but I wouldn't put it past someone to try to remake it someday.
then the hills have eyes remake shouldn't have ever been made.
I read somewhere that Wes Craven preferred the remake to his own original film. Go figure. I thought the Hills remake was pretty good but it was completely unnecessary. I feel the same way about the Dawn of the Dead remake - the running zombies really pissed me off though. (Apparently, Romero didn't like the running zombies either.)
now what did you think of piranha(2010) which was directed by the same director who directed the remake of the hills have eyes, alexandre aja? my gosh this film is amazing. even if it's a remake of one of my all time favorite films piranha (1978)directed by joe dante i would be ok with that bc this film piranha(2010) is technically one of the best horror films and films ever made.
I've never seen the remake. I'm surprised that you like it though. After all, it is a remake…
Maybe I'll check it out someday.
did you actually watch the joke that is the black christmas remake?
Hell no!
i cant' believe andrea martin stooped so low as to act in this movie when she was in the original film.
Maybe she needed the work.
did you like the texas chainsaw massacre remake or the i spit on your grave remake or the the last house on the left remake?
TCM remake was tolerable but unnecessary and NOTHING like the great original film in terms of atmosphere or outright terror. I'd rate it maybe a 5 or 6 out of 10.
I've never seen the I Spit on Your Grave remake (the original was enough…it was such a nasty, mean-spirited film) or Last House remake. I did see The Crazies remake though..it was decent. -
lukejbarnett — 4 years ago(June 27, 2021 04:42 AM)
just cuz some producer wants money so they let a person remake a classic that there is no way a remake can be made better is wrong.
it's the worst part of hollywood and the movie industry. and it's such a bad thing for a movie producer and movie company to do, to let people remake a classic bc they think the young audience needs a movie to be more modern this is such a copout and so delusional, it's not a valid reason to remake a classic film.
it doesn't give them the right to remake the princess bride for instance.
running zombies? this is the worst thing ever in a movie. i'm a horror movie traditionalist so i value and respect slow walking zombies. running zombies is so wrong also on a fear and suspense gaining way to the audience.
i really think it's sad if wes craven liked the remake of his the hills have eyes more than his film. his film is a classic horror film of the highest order. there is no horror film more respected or is more legendary than it is.
well i read that craven produced the hills have eyes remake and approved of the decision to have the director of the great french film haute tension, alexandre aja to direct the remake.
then again preferred might not necessarily mean craven thought the remake is a better film than his original film it might just mean he likes the remake more than this original film.
do you know they freaking made a remake of one of the most respected and legendary horror films ever made in suspiria even? now this is blasphemy. man if they can make a remake of this horror film no film is sacred, no film is off limits for remake.
well you caring to think from writings i've wrote to you about me being a horror movie traditionalist is very sweet to me and makes me feel so good inside. also i love that you are surprised that i loved a remake of a classic film and a cherished film to me in piranha(1978).
so you're surprised bc i told you i love the '80s friday the 13th films more than any of these films made after the '80s bc i'm a f the 13th purist?
piranha(2010) is so epically and legendarily great and classic that it's required viewing by you and i've never seen the violence and carnage and ways of making you very disturbed in the massacre part of this film that happens in the last 30 min. of this film. also it's a perfect film and one of the best horror films made since 2010.
it's in the top 5 for sure. it's also one of them most effective horror films made since 2010 in making you feel fear and dread and bleakness. no hope for our lives and our community.
now are you going to watch this film?
i love how you said hell no to watching the crap fest black christmas remake they didn't even have the decency and respect to the original to call it black christmas, they called it black xmas which is such a ****ing cop out, let's just bow down to the liberal idiot us government and society.
by the way this remake is one of the worst kinds of examples of a bad movie: it has a bunch of girl models running around screaming and trying to get away from a killer. i hate it when actresses in movies look like girl models, they look too beautiful to be a real person who you can relate to.
needed the work? that's not a reason to ever make a movie. just retire if you can't get work. what martin did was deplorable unforgivable, and disrespectful to the original film and to herself she sold out.
exactly one of the main problems with remaking tcm the way they did is it doesn't have the gritty and irreplaceable look and feel of a documentary almost like a snuff film look and feel that the original film has.
i heard someone say the tcm(1974) feels like it was directed by a madman.
ok oh are you so conservative and so innocent and unseasoned a horror movie watcher that you couldn't handle a film like i spit on your grave? i'm being funny not being mean but i just can't believe you were so offended by this film? you are talking about this film like its' an abomination and should have never been made like it's appalling or something? like it's immoral or unethical.
why is this film bad in a moral or ethical way to you? there are a lot of movies like this movie a rape revenge horror movie why did this one go too far to you?
was it the 9 minute first rape scene? or the fact that they don't just rape her once but come back and gang rape her again? i mean what the **** was that about? geez there is exploitation and sexploitation but this is just crude and seems like overkill. at least the director made the scenes not glamourous and not leering, and ugly and raw and realistic.

I agree, though Nightmare City (1980) is the exception and I'm not sure if they're really zombies or just infected people in that film.
do you know they freaking made a remake of one of the most respected and legendary horror films ever made in suspiria even? now this is blasphemy. man if they can make a remake of this horror film no film is sacred, no film is off limits for remake.
Yes, I heard about it. Doubt I'd ever watch it. I can't see how anyone could make a better version of Argento's classic horror film! Speaking of Argento, I did watch Argento's Dracula (2012) recently and enjoyed it even if it isn't one of his great films. Asia Argento does some nude scenes in it. I always thought she was a hottie.
piranha(2010) is so epically and legendarily great and classic that it's required viewing by you and i've never seen the violence and carnage and ways of making you very disturbed in the massacre part of this film that happens in the last 30 min. of this film. also it's a perfect film and one of the best horror films made since 2010.

You make it sound very interesting.

No, I don't think it's immoral or anything like that. It's just mean-spirited. Besides the brutal rape scenes, they made one of the rapists a retarded guy (or "slow" person, to be polite) for crying out loud! That's pretty mean-spirited if you ask me. -

so 2 of my friends have different opinions on re-animator. one said it's a zombie movie and the other said it's not a zombie movie. so what is it? zombie movie or not zombie movie? i never thought of it as a zombie movie. i mean zombies to me are not people revived by a doctor but people who come back from an oil spill or a meteor or from voodoo.
when you said infected people it reminded me a of a splendid cult film called street trash which i finally watched recently. have you ever watched this great and classic film? everyone has to respect and be in awe of this film bc no matter if you like to or not it's amazing just how far they went with grossness and just a "whatever" spirit attitude.
this movie goes not just past the lines of decency and grossness it goes way over these lines.
this movie is so sick and twisted and so over the top with it's violence and human melting scenes that you have to marvel at it's sheer balls, ingenious ideas of what the effects are going to be and look like, and the ideas of the story and characters and the improvisation of the things that they did in this movie. and put in this movie given it's obviously really low budget.
they didn't care at all about taste or being classy, they just said here's our movie deal with it. which is the best way to make a movie.
by the way if you haven't watched this movie you can watch it like i did on you tube in HD for free. just look up street trash full movie.
she'll never stop making nudity scenes which kind of makes her a slut but also is kind of pathetic i mean if in 2012 she did it at 35 then it's like dude when are you going to stop showing nudity in movies? also she looked pretty used and abused and worn out, weathered and old pretty looking way back in 2002 in a movie she showed nudity in which kind of felt autobiographical.
i can't remember the name of the movie but if she looked pretty bad and pretty old looking 20 years ago she looked really bad in 2012, 10 years later. don't know how her dad can make a nudity scene with her in his movie. every time he filmed her me must have closed his eyes. can you imagine how gross and uncomfortable that would be to see your daughter's tits as an adult?
it turns out asia argento is a horrible person. she raped a kid who was like 25 years old when she was like 40 years old. so i have zero respect for her as a person now and for as long as i don't hear anything to refute this.
hey you know you can watch piranha(2010) on this website. just go to it's page and it will show all the video watching links on this website. then you just click play on one of them and it will play the movie without commercials and uncut.
and you of course no coming from me a traditionalist '80s horror movie fan that you have to make a very well made and revolutionary, ground breaking film to make me really impressed by your film if your horror film was made in the '00s to now so for me to say this about piranha(2010) means i was really impressed by this film bc it really is an amazingly great and classic film.
you can say whatever you like about it but one thing you can't say is you were not entertained and you were not blown away by it's carnage the most realistic special effects and suspense.
so please can you watch piranha(2010) for me?
asia argento is one of the most beautiful girls who have ever lived. she was so painfully beautiful in xxx that it was extremely hard to for me to look at her eyes in this movie and she is also amazingly beautiful in the new rose hotel.
but aren't horror movies all about being mean spirited and wild and free with violence and carnage and aren't horror movies all about pushing the envelope of what is accepted in society and to show things that are ugly and that can't be shown in other genres of film? aren't horror movies the most free form of expression in film?
by the way when you described i spit on your grave you reminded me of the retard brother characters in mother's day(1980) sadly another horror film that was wrongly and unnecessarily remade.
now this is a great film, not sure it's a classic film though. i've only watched it 1 time. it had just enough originality and uniqueness to make it a great film that isn't just another generic friday the 13th kind of movie.
have you ever watched mother's day(1980)?
what's mean spirited about a rapist being a retarded guy?
i read online that one of the rape scenes goes on for like 4 minutes or something insane like that? why do we need a rape scene in a horror movie like this movie to go on for 4 minutes? also doesn't the director like leer at her naked body in a very dirty old man, perverse way? like he's a peeping tom and getting off sexually from gratifying himself on her nude body being exploited by these guys?
funny though how the girl who plays the main girl is the real life sister of diane keaton. camille keaton is her name. so while sis was out making great art films like the godfather her sister was floundering in a sick, dehuma -

so 2 of my friends have different opinions on re-animator. one said it's a zombie movie and the other said it's not a zombie movie. so what is it? zombie movie or not zombie movie?
Not a zombie film.

Haven't seen it but I've heard of it.
it turns out asia argento is a horrible person. she raped a kid who was like 25 years old when she was like 40 years old.
That's not rape. And she was a hot 40 years old! It depends on what you find attractive, I guess. In general, I've always preferred women in their thirties and forties even when I was in my twenties. I'm sure the 25 year old she "raped" enjoyed it (but wasn't he younger than 25?)
but aren't horror movies all about being mean spirited and wild and free with violence and carnage and aren't horror movies all about pushing the envelope of what is accepted in society and to show things that are ugly and that can't be shown in other genres of film? aren't horror movies the most free form of expression in film?
Mean-spirited? Not necessarily.
Violence and carnage work in some films but not in others. I prefer atmosphere and suspense over violence and carnage.
Horror films are often very conservative in that they follow a set pattern. Take slasher films, for example. So many of them use the same formula and very rarely stray from that formula. Therefore, I wouldn't say that they're "the most free form of expression in film".
Filmmakers like Cronenberg and Argento are exceptions though, they made some true art; their films often strayed beyond the typical horror movie plot and formula. Surrealist filmmakers like David Lynch are another example of this. "Free form of expression" is not limited to any one genre. Often, it's the films that fall outside of any known genre that are the "freest" ones.
have you ever watched mother's day(1980)?
Yes, it was OK.
what's mean spirited about a rapist being a retarded guy?
It just adds an extra bit of unpleasantness to the film, I guess.
Why make him retarded to begin with? (Granted, all of the rapists were kinda retarded in that film anyway…lol)
so you thought the rape scenes were exploitive and classless and pointless in the context of the kind of movie it is?
No, they belong in the movie but it's an admittedly ugly movie. People can watch it if they want. I have no problem with such a film existing.
I just don't know if I'd consider it to be a true horror film or not. I'd say the same thing about modern 'torture porn' films. -
lukejbarnett — 4 years ago(July 05, 2021 05:18 AM)
a man can never be raped by a woman: you know i thought you were going to say that in response to what i said: and that is very ignorant. she raped him, i read about it online i mean why would there be any man who people found out got raped if it didn't happen?
you know how hard it is for a woman to tell anyone she was raped by a man? it's about 100 times more hard for a man to admit he was raped by a woman. in fact it's so hard that this is one of the extremely small amount of times i've ever heard of a woman raping a man. so it happened.
i read someone online say you know how common it is for a woman to rape a man its very common in a relationship even. think about it men almost never would admit they were raped by a woman bc it means them seem so weak physically and confidence wise.
here's one way it can happen: when a man is asleep she gets on top of him and rapes him. he never gave her consent bc he was asleep, that's rape. also it could happen in a time when a man is to tired or doesn't feel like having sex and his gf does so she coerces him into it even though he doesn't want to, that's rape.
so it happens frequently and often. just bc a man hardly ever admits to being raped by a woman doesn't mean it never happens.
what makes re-animator not a zombie film? i never thought of it as a zombie film maybe bc i like it bc i hardly ever like zombie films.
even worse then that she raped a kid under 25 and even worse then that she was with a guy in a sexual way who was under 25 when she was 40. what a horrible person she is.
now i now that horror films are the most free form of expression in films bc i just heard one of the experts on horror films say this in the doc. i told you abut called in search of darkness and bc i know it's true bc i've watched a lot of horror films and other genres of films.
she said you can get away with so many taboos that you cant' get away with, show in other genres of film. that's why horror films are so great bc they are this nothing is forbidden kind of film. you can let your freak flag high in this kind of film. that's why i love horror films bc they show weird people doing weird things and they are all about being different and weird and that is why they are the most fun kind of movie that there is to me.
ok? ok? it was awesome! mother's day was a treat for me. now i'm not going to sit here and praise it and say it's the best horror film or even slasher film ever made bc it's not that great of a film. but it's more transgressive and bold and brave than most slasher films and horror films.
it's these things bc the extent it went in showing how mean and depraved and cruel these wacko retarded brothers are in a serious and realistic way. there's no winking at the camera or campy scenes of humor in the form that are in the friday the 13th films, no these guys are dangerous and the horror is stark and realistic and unnerving in this film.
i brought it back to scarecrow video and told the guy who put his staff pick sticker on it that it wasn't a good movie but after thinking about it more, i realize it is a great film. again it was a film that eli roth loves so i thought i would be a classic film.
now this is a free expression film. it's one of them most sexist an misogynist against girls movie ever made. which is one of the many reasons i love it.
the main reason i love it is it brings back the feelings and memories i have of watching the friday the 13th from the '80s. it looks, sounds, and feels like in atmosphere the first 5 friday the 13th films.
i also love the pain and torture they put that girl through. nothing please me more than watching a girl get tortured in a slasher film.
about i spit on your grave: why not make him retarded? i don't understand why you have a moral problem with making a rapist retarded?
by the way how can you love the film the last house on the left(1972) which is about a guy who raped a girl but yet have a problem with a retarded guy raping a girl in i spit on your grave?
oh, so you think i spit on your grave is a film without merit bc it's an exploitation film?
