I'm not sure about the over-parenting stuff, but I do agree that technology has led to an increase in obesity. A lot of toys (nerf guns, for example) actually encouraged physical activity. Now I'm seeing kids with tablets. The video games are much more immersive than they were in the 90's. Most of the earlier video games were too short, limited and repetitive to play all day and become addictive. The internet was slow and had little to offer compared to today. Growing up in the 90's, there was nothing to keep you inside for too long. I spent 90% of my childhood outdoors, but I'd probably never want to leave the house if I were a kid today.
Right that's my point that you don't see kids "action/outdoor" toys anymore because parents discourage their kids from exploring outside these days. So kids don't feel the need to go outside either and would prefer sticking to their computers and video games. It's funny how video games went from nerdy in the mid 90s to the number one selling industry for kids.
I'm not going to lie and say that some kids preferred to stay in. My mom used to have to drag my brother outside in the early to mid 90s because he would have rather been playing Legend of Zelda on his Nintendo. I can remember playing outside even if it was drizzling or it was 10 degrees outside. (we'd just go sit by the laundry vent and warm ourselves up). Even I started to feel more of a longing to play video games or watch tv inside than to go outside by the late 90s.
The call of technology was strong in the late 90s, early 00s. But I think the media also overplayed violence, kidnappings on the news too.

        @ Felix
Ok thanks for summing that up. You are right that is something I don't see much of at all anymore kids playing outside or at the playground. I try to take my little neice and nephew outside to play on the trampoline, on their bikes, or whatever. I know my nephew he is 5 years old and already into video games I want to try to make him active. Today I think I've seen more over weight kids I really think its because of laziness back in the day if a kid was overweight it probably just ran in the family or he was just a chunky kid.
I also lost my taste for soda as well, every now and then I'll drink a sprite or 7-up to make me burp or for that bubbly feel.

Uh oh, yeah I've noticed an increase in "chunkiness" it seems even the sporty kids can't avoid. I remember liking video games when I was 5 but I mean Bonks Revenge was as good as it got. after about an hour and a half, I was bored and wanted to go outside. Games have such cinematic quality and complexity about them. I'm not going to say that type of stimulation is bad for kids. Storytelling definitely helps a young mind grow, so movies, books, even complex video games are bound to have a positive effect. The worst part is the sedentary lifestyle they encourage and worst of all the violence. I can remember sobbing at the moment in Neverending Story when Artax dies in the swamp, I can't imagine how traumatizing violent videos games must be to little kids.
Anyway, back on the subject, why should kids go outside if they're not encouraged to? My mom always made going outside sound like an adventure and where I lived wasn't exactly the best place. You couldn't walk around and I was pretty much confined to a condo complex. Still I was out everyday because I
          wanted
to play outside. I feel like kids don't
          want
to play outside anymore and because of that they won't. We've made playing outside a chore for kids.
I also lost my taste for soda as well, every now and then I'll drink a sprite or 7-up to make me burp or for that bubbly feel.
LOL that's my favorite partI bought a pepsi earlier today for the first time in awhile. I liked carbonated beverages, I just think some of the main brands try to make their flavors so extreme because they know people used to it won't taste anything if it isn't. People become accustomed to large amounts of sugar and salt.

Munch Em's (as somebody mentioned above) were AMAZING. The ranch ones were the best ever. I wish they still existed.
Magic Middles - those shortbread cookies with melted chocolate inside.
Bonkers (I kinda remember the commercials more than the candy itself, lol.)
            As for drinks:
            Hi-C Ecto Cooler
Orbitz - the water with the little jelly balls. NOBODY seems to remember this, however.

I know how depressing! I wandered around aimlessly for 10 minutes in a grocery store a few years looking for them, only to realize they had been discontinued! I came home from college feeling nostalgic for them, so it was only a couple of years after I used to buy them.
I remember the Orbitz btw, the commercials used to fascinate me. They were always so sleek.

Yeah the were today I look in the cereal isle at the store when grocery shopping and its just plainboring. I love how people took chances with cereal and made it fun for kids prizes are something I hardly see in cereal boxes. I guess today they have to be safe some kid might swallow it.

While introduced prior to the 1990s and not technically a snack, I recall that McDonald's Happy Meals came with cool things in the 1990s, including a cool toy related to (I think) the 1996 Olympics (it involved trying to flick a tiny ball into something). I live in Australia, and recall that toy continuing to be occasionally issued with Happy Meals for several years (usually when nothing else was going on), indicating that the Australian division of McDonald's had too many in stock and didn't manage to give them all away during the Olympics itself.
It's strange to think I was so incredibly amused by such a simple and cheap plastic toy.
I also recall with great fondness a Sonic the Hedgehog canned pasta thing, but I am not sure if it was late-1990s or early-2000s. I ate it even though the taste wasn't very good, simply because I liked Sonic so much.
I want a signature involving brave swordsmen, kinescopes, and soft drinks

I remember them! I clicked on the link, and saw that I had some of those toys. I especially remember the glow-in-the-dark trolls. But speaking of the snacks, I used to always bring Lunchables Pizzas for lunch in elementary school, and I would agree it made you feel cool. They also had Lunchables Tacos, Nachos, Burgers, Hotdogs and breakfast foods briefly. I was also a fruit snack kid. I remember dinosaur fruit snacks and the shark ones, as well. Then there was that soda called Surge, which tasted almost like Mello Yello.
I love Jesus Christ and am 100% proud!

That is so true thanks for posting that. When I was a kid in school I never brought my lunch to school I always had the meal ticket to eat in the cafeteria but I remember one time in the 4th grade I begged her to let me bring a lunch to school like some of my friends did. I think I had the sandwich just like on that article, some chips, something sweet and unhealthy.lol, I think it was the ring dings (wrapped up in foil).
I remember the bugles I used to do that with those chips and pretend that I had some nails.

Gatorade Lemon Ice - This was the best flavor! I don't know why they discontinued it.
Sloppy Joes - Not really a snack but they were very popular at school.
French Toast Crunch - They're bringing this one back!
Choco Taco - I used to always get these at the nearby convenience store.
Toaster Strudel - One of those sweets-disguised-as-breakfast foods. I loved to eat the icing separate from the pastry.
Ice Cream Snicker Bars - Yum! They sold these at my school and summer camp.

When you said French Toast Crunch I was thinking of Cinnamon toast crunch. I remember that cereal I didn't like it. Chaco tacois that the ice cream shaped like a taco? I seen that in stores I know we stocked those in our ship store on the ship when I was in the Navy.

Really? I've always considered Cinnamon Toast Crunch the crème de la crème of cereal. The cinnamon-flavored milk it left behind was the taste of victory! But yeah, French Toast was a spin off the cereal. It looked like miniature toast.
