6/10 A serviceable monster movie. Wish they'd stuck with the practical effects, though the CGI wasn't all that bad. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was pretty good. Worth a watch for fans of the sub genre.

they really screwed the pooch on this one. I mean besides failing at every aspect of it the only time it was good was when it was over. If it wasn't for the fact that my wife stars in it I'd give it a lower rating 4/10.

I watched a documentary somewhere possibly a change.org thing where they explain most the effects were practical but then they slapped cgi all over it.
If I remember where I saw this doc I will come back & post it in this thread. -

No your right. As a matter of when the decision was made to go to CGI, the original practical FX company went off on their own and produced Harbinger Down to showcase some of the practical FX they developed for The Thing 2011. A lot it was good, some of it was hokey but the potential was there.

Yea you have reminded me pretty sure it was part of the Harbinger Down pitch video that talked about the practical effects.
I will have to look the old campaign up but I am 99% sure that is what I was thinking about.
Harbinger Down wasn't very good but you are right that it had potential didn't have enough money behind it though. -

I liked it, the prequel concept was the way to go to expand the story into another movie. But why title it "The Thing" unless you want to confuse people into thinking it's a remake? They shoulda called it "The Pre-Thing" or "The Thing Before The Thing." 8/10

5.5 on 10
Good idea, good production values, but appallingly substandard dialogue and acting. I believe they'd have done better to hire a trained monkey to write the dialogue, and hire a crew of trained monkeys to be the actors. It's a serious suggestion- this strategy worked well for the
Planet of the Apes
franchise.
