I think he said on a talk show that for the part, he went "undercover" as something like a UPS or delivery guy just to see if people would recognize him. He wanted to have such a strikingly different appearance as to how we usually expect to see him.
This is such an exceptional movie and Cruise played his part perfectly.
Being such a massive Tom Cruise fan, I'm not sure I could just pick one. A few that stand out in addition to Collateral would be Last Samurai, Tropic Thunder, all of the Mission Impossible movies, Taps, Interview with the Vampire, Top Gun, Born on the Fourth of July, Legend, Risky Business.
But it was when I first saw him in Taps that I became a fan. He stood out so much among the other cadets. Even back then, he had a very strong presence.

I agree with all your picks and I'd add Vanilla Sky. That was certainly different too!

              Valkyrie
Eyes Wide Shut, too, but I consider that one to be a "Kubrick movie", if you know what I mean. It belongs to Kubrick and Kubrick alone. The actors are merely parts of a whole.

Yeah, Colonel Von Stauffenberg. I believe he was a good guy. Taking out Hitler then and there could've ended the war faster and saved millions of lives.

                    I agree.
Just showing the only way Nazis can be acceptable.
I don't think saving Jews was part of their intentions in removing Hitler but it would have maybe been a side effect.

I guess what I meant by that, is he seemed convincing in the role of a war hawk US senator, and it was not the typical role that Tom Cruise is usually type cast in.
