What are your top five bands debuting (let's say) post-2005 whose music pays homage to/retains the spirit of the "classic" 80s indie-pop bands. Can range from lo-fi noisy-punk like Vivian Girls to dream-pop like Wild Nothing.

There are tons of bands who might fit this rangeHere are five off the top of my head:
      A Place to bury Strangers
      Beach House
      Lower Dens
      Warpaint
      Ty Segall

Well was hoping for an actual Top 5, but thats cool.
APTBS definitely, the debut is like a slightly more post-punky
        Psychocandy
. Beach House probably scrape in at the very mellow dream-poppy end of the spectrum. Ive given Lower Dens a listen but honestly dont recall much. Thought Ty Segall was pure Garage Rock (I could be wrong). Was going for (Indie)POP jangly and/or fuzzy guitars, girl-group harmonies but with a lo-fi/off the cuff charm.

Ty Segall is Lo-fi and a bit more varied than just Garage Rock.
There are a bunch of newer independent bands playing with Shoegaze, Dream Pop, "90's" indie, Noise, etc so the list is longI'll post you some when I get a chance to type them outMaybe some you haven't heard of(Doubtful)and some I know you would dig

No problem Dayo. Sure they'll be a few I haven't encountered.

              Very tentative:
              Veronica Falls
              The Bilinda Butchers
              Allo Darlin'
              La Sera
              Girls

I seem to have gone off the Vivian Girls, after having a phase of being very keen on them. So that leaves -
                Best Coast
                Dum Dum Girls
                Limiñanas
                The Mantles
                Warpaint
It has to be said that I like the Mantles in "channelling the Clean" mode, rather than "we want to sign for Slumberland" mode. They divide their time pretty equally between the two. I am at least 75% less indie than I used to be these days, and it shows.

Yep I know you struggle with contemporary "indie" but thanks for the input.
BC and DDG (and VG) just missed the cut for me. Like I said, my picks are pretty tentative so on any other day.
The little Warpaint I've heard didn't grab me initially. I may have to give them another shot. I know they have a couple of very vocal supporters here.
Liminanas and The Mantles I haven't heard so I'll definitely give them a listen. I'll probably even find the Slumberland leanings a positive.

Not only do the Mantles sometimes sound like they really want to sign to Slumberland, they have indeed done so, and have released two albums on the label. My sieve-like memory tends to associate them with Mexican Summer, which they only released one or two records on. Anyway, I'm pretty sure you'd like them.

Cheers Doc. I remember hearing La Luz in a shop once and really liking them. Been meaning to look into them further.
The Vaccines didn't really do a lot for me and again as with Ty Segall (above) I always associated Allah-Las more with Garage Rock/Psych revival. Will check out the other two.

Not sure I've ever heard the term, but possibly -
                            Vivian Girls
                            Dum Dum Girls
                            Warpaint
                            Brilliant Colors
                            Las Robertas
I credit the Vivs with starting a "wave", or something.

Not sure I've heard it either, but was sort of what I was hoping to get at and better the "Nu"-Indie-Pop. I would probably agree Vivian Girls were one of the first of this new wave.
Will check out Las Robertas when I get a chance.

I hope you like 'em. Girls At Dawn, Coasting, The Coolies were others ones I liked a lot, and then there's PENS. I think this song is just brilliant -

I just assumed "Honey Bunny" would have been one of the two.
They're one of those bands that I can listen to all of their output, but those two singles to me are excellent.

                                          ), "Just a Song" (from
