        "
        Day of the Dove
" is the second-best episode of the third-season after "
        The Enterprise Incident
        ".
I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature,

Not definitive for me by any means, but-
            Best:
            Balance of Terror
            Space Seed
City on the Edge of Forever
            Mirror Mirror
            The Doomsday Machine
            Journey to Babel
            The Tholian Web
The Trouble with Tribbles, A Piece of the Action, The Ultimate Computer, The Naked Time, A Taste of Armageddon, and more could have easily been included. The Tholian Web is there in part as a s3 representative.
            Worst:
            The Alternative Factor
            Who Mourns for Adonais?
            The Paradise Syndrome
            And the Children Shall Lead
            Wink of an Eye
            The Mark of Gideon
            The Way to Eden
Omega Glory and Spock's Brain probably deserve to be on the worst list before a couple of others listed here, but I get more entertainment value out of them (same goes for The Way to Eden, but its bad enough to make the list anyway).

I'm curious why so many people have plato's stepchildren on their worst episode list, and why it has such a low rating on imdb? Surely it isn't because of that interracial kiss considering it's 2016. I didn't think the episode was one of the best, but it wasn't so horrible to call it one of the worst either. Reasons?

The "power corrupts" theme of "Plato's Stepchildren" has been done better, and so has the "aliens with gnarly mental powers" bit. The centerpiece of the episode is an extended torture/humiliation scene, which is particularly distasteful and unpleasant, and that is what leaves a bad taste for me. There is nothing enjoyable, entertaining, or interesting in these scenes, and no real point being made. It is uncomfortable and frankly painful to watch.
The only positive thing about the episode is the always excellent Michael Dunn.

The only positive for me about the episode is seeing Barbara Babcock again. IMO, she deserved more screen time and would have been far better in a more "command" type role like in "Wink Of An Eye" than Kathie Browne (who IMO lacked Babcock's gravitas to be credible as a queen).

"Aliens with gnarly mental powers" is one of the most overused (and annoying) tropes in all of science fiction.

I wonder why so many have
                          Mirror, Mirror
on their best lists. I wouldn't put it on my worst list, but "alternate universe" stories just don't do much for me.
But anyway, and in no particular order…
                          Worst:

                          7. The Way to Eden

                          8. Amok Time
                          9. The City on the Edge of Forever
                          10. Journey to Babel
                          11. The Conscience of the King
                          12. Balance of Terror

                          14. The Enterprise Incident
It was a lot harder to fill the "best" list than it was the "worst." I loved the show when I was a kid, but it's terribly dated now.

We all have different opinions, of course. "Whom Gods Destroy" is salvaged by a fine performance by Steve Ihnat; I like "Spock's Brain" as a satire on on network television, and in the "so bad it's good" vein of entertainment. "Plato's Stepchildren" is pretty awful.
"Catspaw" has a fairly interesting theme - the psychological horror of things that go bump in the night - but the theme is poorly explored, it has limited, repetitive action, and the atmosphere is wasted on a fairly silly narrative. I think they could have done much, much better. As a "harmless piece of fluff" it should at least be more entertaining.
