Why did the apes have guns?

In the first scene where the apes capture the humans many of them are shown with guns. The ape society was oblivious that humans had once been more advanced than they were (with the exception of Dr. Zaius). When Vera and Cornelius are talking she says he found artifacts that suggested an advanced civilization had preceded them but everyone refused to believe it. So the guns the apes are using are they guns they simply found and never questioned their origins? Or they somehow reinvented guns without help from old relics found?

In Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the apes possessed the remainder of civilization's armaments (with the exception of the weaponry in the hands of the mutants). Over time, those weapons needed to be replaced, so the apes came up with ways to manufacture new ones.

OK so if they found guns left behind by man how did none of them question that? Wouldn't have been logical for them to assume that a more advanced civilization had preceded them since the ancient weapons were more advanced than their own.

The "apes" aren't really apes. This film is just a satire of humans. It's the same anthropomorphism you get in cartoons where animals are given human characteristics in order to satirize humans EXCEPT that most cartoons are comedies and this has pretensions of being a so-called "serious sci-fi drama." These pretensions are quite silly though. There are so many holes in this movie, you can drive a fleet of Mack trucks through them. People love this film simply because it's very entertaining, WEIRD, and unintentionally funny, plus it has that good Twilight Zone twist in the end.

"The 'apes' aren't really apes This film is just a satire of humans.."
Honorius: "Objection!!! These remarks are profane and irrelevant!!"
President of the Assembly: "SUSTAINED!! You go to far!!!"
Dr Zaius: "I think an indictment is in order"
Honorius: "Yes sir! The state charges him with Heresy!!"
President of the Assembly: "It's so ordered!"
LOL sorry couldn't resist. -

In Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the apes possessed the remainder of civilization's armaments
But that was a different timeline. The events of Battle for the Planet of the Apes was after Cornelius and Zira went back in time (
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
. Their offspring (Caesar) taught the other apes how to talk and they started the war with the humans, which eventually led to the mutants in
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
.

There are those who would argue that Battle did not occur in a different timeline, as Caesar's presence had no influence on the raised intelligence level (or the slave situation) of the ape masses.
He certainly provided leadership, but Caesar pointed out that apes on five continents would be likewise rebelling, and he certainly wouldn't be there. -

The screenwriter would disagree with you.

Yeah but they're not using primitive black powder muskets, they're using like legit assault rifles with bullets and clips. Maybe it's just me but I found that to be strange that their guns would randomly have become so strikingly similar to human weapons without human weapons having been an inspiration. Maybe this is better explained in the book, from what I hear the ape civilization is quite a bit more advanced in the book, they are on par with 1950's America. They have cars and TVs etc.
