It's often hard to separate Jane the personality from Jane the actress, but she totally became the characters in "Klute" and "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" These are thoughtful, gritty performances that are too often ignored when people focus on her activism.
It's too bad that she was merely "good" in many of her later roles, but she set the bar quite high early in her career. And "Monster in Law" was just plain embarrassing, in my book!

This may not make me particularly "cinematically cultured" but i thought she was freaking hilarious in Monster-in-Law.

Oh, that's OK. There are a lot of films I love that other people hate. But I would have liked "Monster in Law" more if they didn't show the best scenes already in the previews.

troyI completely agreeher performances in those 2 pictures are astonishing. I think her relationship with Hayden must've released something in hera freedom to rebel, unshackle herself from the repressiveness of her cold, austere father. In both performances, she's alive every moment. She understands and projects both the characters' iron toughness and vulnerability perfectly. They're amazing accomplishments. Nothing else she did achieved that level of brilliance, and a number of her efforts are undistinguished. But her Gloria and Bree are two of the finest performances you'll see on film.

One of Jane's finest performances..she earned her Oscar as well as for
            Coming Home
..watch her in this one making love to Jon Voigt, a paraplegicshe earned her Oscar for this role as well!
So add Sally Hyde to the list with Gloria Beatty and Bree Daniels.
"Oh my God! Where did that orchestra come from??"..

Streisand says she tells Jane Fonda all the time if it hadn't been for her she wouldn't have a career because she turned down Klute, Julia and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Streisand also says she's kinda sad she turned down Julia because Lillian Hellman said to her, "YOU should've played me"

And Jane Fonda also turned down Bonnie and Clyde and The Exorcist BTW. Can you imagine Streisand as Bree Daniels or Gloria Beattyplease.

I was a bit sad when I heard Jane turned down The Exorcist but she says she doesn't like scary movies. Jane has turned down A LOT of films, sadly

Yes, Streisand turned down the role and Fonda got the Oscar. But I can't see Fonda doing
                            Funny Girl
, can you? Among Pauline Kael's favorites was Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand.
Both wonderful actresses in the right vehicles..
"Oh my God! Where did that orchestra come from??"..

Jane Fonda winning for Klute in 1971 was one of the most deserved Best Actress wins in Oscar history. Bree Daniels is such a great character. Fonda was astonishing and painful to watch, in a good way. She simply blew me away.
