I would bet that seventy grand in depression era dollars is almost the equivalent of a million dollars today.
Considering that at this time men were working long hard days for a dollar, that was almost twenty years wages, at that time.
I think it would have behooved him to go to Mexico or points beyond.

Yes he would have been better off to go on to Mexico but the point of that scene was to show he just couldn't because he just had to go on living his dream
