It is another one of those movies at the time that is anti authoritarian where something bad, usually murdered and in this case again, of the anti hero or the guy we root for.
This was the trend for movies of the late 60's/early 70's.

It's a well-made movie, but I don't enjoy it at all. I can't root for a dude who sleeps with teenagers just because he's anti-authority. There's almost no one to like or cheer for in this movie. People fell for this movie because it's anti-authority. Problem is McMurphy is a worse person than Ratched.

Have you by chance seen a movie that came out about the same time called Scarecrow?
Also somewhat anti authority.
About a couple of drifters who meet and their bonding and adventures.
I prefer that one.
