the movie and the book give different messages.
the movie has chief killing mcmurphy for being a vegetable with no quality of life after the lobotomy. the book has chief killing him so he doesn't serve an an example of what happens if you challenge the powers that be. Which I think the overlying message is that there is a very thin line between the sickness of the mentally ill and the sickness of those who abuse power.
Billy Bibbit was the one that really broke my heart though. the kills himself because nurse ratched says she is going to tell billy' mother that he lost his virginity. -

It's about women who castrate and lobotomize and shackle men. However, these women represent a controlling society which destroys the free male spirit. Society itself is feminized into the Nanny State. Remember that the only positive female characters are whores.

They weren't whores. One was just used to flirt with the janitor to have a little going away party. RP could have just left immediately, but he was their savior, and gave them back their dignity. And the other was very nice and empathetic towards Billy.
I think the Nurse Wretcheds are the prostitutes of society.

I mean 'whores' in the good sense as women who embrace sexuality without using it as a ploy for manipulation.
I also don't believe the theme is a misogynistic one. Both the feminized "Nanny State" and the brutal "Big Brother" are the two heads of the same oppressive Janus.
