I'm considering reading the source novel for
      In a Lonely Place
      soon. I read
      The Expendable Man
by the same author recently - published shortly after the film noir era and never adapted anyway - and I had mixed thoughts on it. The one moment of brilliance would be impossible to replicate on screen. So if I decide to read it, I'll definitely rewatch the film.
      Gun Crazy
      and
      Nightmare Alley
are rated correctly. I'd probably reverse your ratings for
      The Big Steal
      and
      Crossfire
. Neither are Robert Mitchum's best film noir, which would be
      The Night of the Hunter
      .

Pretty impressive intake. I hope you gave yourself like, a month or so to digest all those titles.
Again –purist that I am –I wouldn't designate every single one of these pictures a 'noir' but it's good all-around crime cinema just the same.
        Bravo.

            Jean-Pierre Melville's "
            Bob le Flambeur
            "? You'd label that a "noir"?
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_le_flambeur
I'd consider it a candidate for
            (1) one of the best gambling movies ever; or
            (2) one of the best heist films ever; or
            (3) one of the best French films ever; or
            (4) one of the best crime films ever.
Never heard anyone ever call it a noir

              Good group!
Nightmare Ally was very good, Power played such a money hungry sleaze. Blondel was also very good in this. She had more talent than a lot of people give her credit for. Such good twists and the ending was very satisfying and no more than he deserved.
I could take or leave Gun Crazy.
In a Lonely Place was so tense. Nice buildup. Bogart didn’t look well in this, but it suited the role. Graham was always one of my favorites. She had a very sad death IRL.
The Strange Loves of Martha Ives is one of my favorites. I’m a rabid Stanwyck fan, and the cast was fab in this. What an ending! A very young Douglas in a whimp role, so against what his later roles were. Also adore Heflin.
The Big Steal …… I’ll watch anything with Mitchum. Not his best, though.
Crossfire was very intense. Ryan was his barely contained boiling point self.
If you can’t say something nice, say something clever but devastating.
