When I was 16, I saw this movie in the theatre, and found it was a riot. I don't know why it wasn't a bigger hit over here either. However, now that I have seen it on DVD once again, I now see it as almost a different movie altogether.
Why do I remember this movie as being so much funnier before? It doesn't appear that there is as much of the chaos, riotousness, and hilarity that I remember seeing? And even the prescence of half of Saturday Night Live and SCTV (Akroyd, Belushi, Candy, O'Flaherty, and some I may have missed) can't seem to shore it up as much as I would have expected.
Some problems with the DVD version: 1) it is too long, and too slow in many places. That is the biggest problem. I didn't feel I got enough quirkiness bang for my buck. Dialogues appeared to be dragged out in developing the story, which diluted the jokes therein, making them less punchy. 2) Wasn't there an old guy in a WWI pilot flack suit who rode around in a souped-up motorized wheelchair fighting the Japs on the highways and byways of California? The motorized wheelchair actually ran about as fast as a motorcycle (or am I getting this confused with another movie?). 3) Now that I am looking at it, I notice that all those different stories don't come together the way you expect, in fact, I don't sense any unifying pull to the stories. 4) most of the stills in the other parts of the DVD are presented without comment, really dragging out something that is already dragged out; 4) the interviews are all interesting, but I noticed whole sections of the interview are repeated. This also makes a long section even longer.

While I wouldn't place "1941" in the pantheon of Steven's best films, but after taking me a good number of years to finally concede, it's not that bad of an escapist roller-coaster. It's ensemble comedic cast (especially the late Slim Pickens & Eddie Deezen), John Williams score, and visuals do grow on me when I pop it in my player (Universal's extended cut, of course!)
As for Spielberg's most ignominous stinkers (and every filmmaker has at least one to their shame), "Lost World", "Hook" and "Twilight Zone" take the Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively! -

I loved it too. Saw it when it first came out when I was 12. I haven't seen it for a couple of years now, and there is one part that kind of bugs me. Maybe I missed something, but when Murray Hamilton and Eddie Deezen are on the ferris wheel, Murray starts out on the left side and Eddie on right, but later in the movie, Eddie is now on the left side and Murray is on the right. I can't see Spielberg making that kind of a blunder. So if I missed something, what was it?

I also enjoyed this film in a certain capacity. All of the scenes featuring John Belushi as Captain Wild Bill Kelso were my personal favorites. Aside from his character, I was somewhat lost. I felt that there were far too many storylines being played out.

I REALLY like this film. When it came out I couldn't understand why the critics were trashing it. They claimed that biggest negative among many were the too numerous plot lines. I guess none of them had ever seen "
Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
" before. And I think it has one of Williams' best soundtracks. His music here had energy and life, unlike when he conducted the Boston Pops. -

I used to watch this film religiouly on my betamax machine in the early 80's.
I saw it by accident at the movies waiting in line for another film
(The Black Hole) and enjoyed this film better. It was awesome on the big screen. This film reminds me of a modern day version of It's a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World with it's multiple characters an storylines. I still enjoy watching this film to this day. It's broad in it's slapstick humor and has a great cast.
It has all the Spielberg touches that would make him the famous director that he is today.
