    I love this one !
maby it's because I loved it so much when I was a kid, I remember laughing so hard I cried, at the theater ?
maby it's the great cast, the feel, the score ?
the facination of not being able to get the long version of it, also kept me interested, all these years.
I finaly got it on DVD, and I'm still very fond of it.
I can see why this one flopped in the US, it probably was more succesful in Europa, where people could just enjoy it as a crazy comedy.

I too realy love this film. Whithout a doubt it was a complete flop at the box office when it was released. Maybe the memories of Vietnam were still to distinct and war was something that simply couldn't be funny.
The fact of the matter is "1941" has a spectacular cast and some great cameos. The film seems to get better after you have seen it a few times. There are so many subtle things that are histerical to me now. Like at the USO dance when the Jitterbug contest starts the talent scout from RKO notices a white mouse crawling around on the sholder of Sam. My absolute favorite scenes though are the ones on the farris Wheel. The first time the dummy is revealed is classic.
      "He's a little tall for a Jap wouldn't you say?" (Mad-Man Maddox)
"Yea but those Japs are sneaky bastards sir" (Wanoski)
"Your right..check him for stilts!" (Mad-Man Maddox)
And as for MR. Spielbergs worst I would have to nominate Hook.
"Captain Wild Bill Kelso and don't you forget it!"

Am with you, I liked this film a lot, and Spiebergs worst?, Hook, Robin Williams as Peter Pan, you have got to be taking the piss.

Agreed this is a brilliant film the tank and the paint factory, "who said that?"
          "the radio"
          BANG BANG BANG
          and of course,
".under no circumstances must you take the ammo rack here and insert into slot a here."

Oy, thank God ! I used to believe I was the only person in the world to love 1941. I still don't understand why EVERYBODY hates this one. Spielberg-haters, maybe ? ( yeah. Japanese Spielberg-haters )

When I was 16, I saw this movie in the theatre, and found it was a riot. I don't know why it wasn't a bigger hit over here either. However, now that I have seen it on DVD once again, I now see it as almost a different movie altogether.
Why do I remember this movie as being so much funnier before? It doesn't appear that there is as much of the chaos, riotousness, and hilarity that I remember seeing? And even the prescence of half of Saturday Night Live and SCTV (Akroyd, Belushi, Candy, O'Flaherty, and some I may have missed) can't seem to shore it up as much as I would have expected.
Some problems with the DVD version: 1) it is too long, and too slow in many places. That is the biggest problem. I didn't feel I got enough quirkiness bang for my buck. Dialogues appeared to be dragged out in developing the story, which diluted the jokes therein, making them less punchy. 2) Wasn't there an old guy in a WWI pilot flack suit who rode around in a souped-up motorized wheelchair fighting the Japs on the highways and byways of California? The motorized wheelchair actually ran about as fast as a motorcycle (or am I getting this confused with another movie?). 3) Now that I am looking at it, I notice that all those different stories don't come together the way you expect, in fact, I don't sense any unifying pull to the stories. 4) most of the stills in the other parts of the DVD are presented without comment, really dragging out something that is already dragged out; 4) the interviews are all interesting, but I noticed whole sections of the interview are repeated. This also makes a long section even longer.

While I wouldn't place "1941" in the pantheon of Steven's best films, but after taking me a good number of years to finally concede, it's not that bad of an escapist roller-coaster. It's ensemble comedic cast (especially the late Slim Pickens & Eddie Deezen), John Williams score, and visuals do grow on me when I pop it in my player (Universal's extended cut, of course!)
As for Spielberg's most ignominous stinkers (and every filmmaker has at least one to their shame), "Lost World", "Hook" and "Twilight Zone" take the Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively!

I loved it too. Saw it when it first came out when I was 12. I haven't seen it for a couple of years now, and there is one part that kind of bugs me. Maybe I missed something, but when Murray Hamilton and Eddie Deezen are on the ferris wheel, Murray starts out on the left side and Eddie on right, but later in the movie, Eddie is now on the left side and Murray is on the right. I can't see Spielberg making that kind of a blunder. So if I missed something, what was it?

I also enjoyed this film in a certain capacity. All of the scenes featuring John Belushi as Captain Wild Bill Kelso were my personal favorites. Aside from his character, I was somewhat lost. I felt that there were far too many storylines being played out.

Yeah, I just got the Collector's Edition on DVD the other day. I enjoyed it, just not as much as Spielberg's other films. Still, it had a decent cast, score, and humor to it.

Bear in mind, Steven Spielberg's Worst Film is an incredibly relative concept. There are plenty of film directors that would kill to have his worst on their resumes.

I REALLY like this film. When it came out I couldn't understand why the critics were trashing it. They claimed that biggest negative among many were the too numerous plot lines. I guess none of them had ever seen "
Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
" before. And I think it has one of Williams' best soundtracks. His music here had energy and life, unlike when he conducted the Boston Pops.

I used to watch this film religiouly on my betamax machine in the early 80's.
I saw it by accident at the movies waiting in line for another film
(The Black Hole) and enjoyed this film better. It was awesome on the big screen. This film reminds me of a modern day version of It's a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World with it's multiple characters an storylines. I still enjoy watching this film to this day. It's broad in it's slapstick humor and has a great cast.
It has all the Spielberg touches that would make him the famous director that he is today.

                                      was his worst.
