As someone has suggested Patrick Stewart (great choice) as Merlin, similar reasons propel me to offer Liam Neeson?

How about Alan Rickman as Merlin?

            Liam Neeson, hands-down. No contest.

                  How about Benedict Cumberbatch?
I know, I know: Hes in EVERYTHING lately.. But, he has a great voice, an ethereal presence & the looks to carry it off..
To be honest, I just want him to crack on with series 3 of Sherlock (& 4,5,6,7,8.), however, I would be willing to allow him a "sabbatical" for this one!

For sheer wit, irony, intelligence & invention, no one will ever come close to Nicol Wiilamson's performance in Excalibur.
They broke the mold after this guy. See his Hamlet. It's brilliant.
