It's Steve Martin at his best! I rate this and The Jerk as his two best.

Me too, although I would also throw in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and The Lonely Guy as amongst his best as well.

You are absolutely correct..whenever asked to name my favorite Steve Martin movies, this one always slips my mind and I don't why, because it is so freakin'
          funny!

I concur. Steve Martin was great in this film.

I was so surprised to see this was only rated 6.2, it's much, much better than that. I saw this for the first time a few days ago and just love the way it never lets up the zany madness for its whole running time. Good stuff.

I've only seen a handful of films starred by Steve Martin but TMWTB has to be the best of them all. It's utterly silly and preposterous, and that's exactly why it works. This movie reminded me Young Frankenstein and some of the Monty Python sketches.
If you wanna spend 90 minutes of sheer fun silliness some boring sunday evening, this movie is for you.

'L.A. Story' is really good too.. He actually revives 'Pointy Birds' in that one.

Martin himself is to blame he doesn't make films like this anymore. He is an A PLUS SNOB!

This is hilarious, along with Planes Trains And Automobiles my fave Martin film, but in that film hes more of the straight man, while in this he is hilarious as is the whole film, a superb comedy classic.

like "the brain that wouldn't die", "frankenstein" and "the invisible man" vibe in a 1980's comedy starring steve martin at his best here perhaps i think, i don't know how well known "brain that wouldn't die" flick is but if you've seen it you get to really come to think of that plot as the first of this movie is playing out. i didn't care for this movie as a kid but caught it today and enjoyed the gags throughout the movie, the merv griffin bit was a riot. by the way, has kathleen turner ever played anything close to an ordinary woman? or is it always insane bitches, serial killers, treasure huntress etc? i didn't discover the original title to this until now, the translated (swedish) title that i've always known it by actually has his complicated last name in the title, i can just imagine all the pronouncement fuss that must have caused, that gag was suppose to stay IN the movie, wasn't it.
                              on the b side,
with memories of the swinging times,
when it was all new in play,
before i learned the notes of today,
                              wanna some records trade,
but i can't walk the wax way,
too late to repeat the old lines,
                              on the flip side.
