This film proves why The Thing was such a bad film.

I like
The Thing
, but I must agree that
Starman
is a much more well-rounded movie. It has heart, charm, fear, sadness, and love like you said.
The Thing
has great special effects, it is directed and edited well, and the ending is unique. It is acted well also. But we never feel a whole lot for the characters. It is good, but
Starman
is underrated.
When the OP says that many folks consider
The Thing
a bad movie, I believe he or she means, people outside of IMDB who are not familiar with the technical aspects of filmmaking. Film nerds see it as a marvel after looking into it. On the other hand, I can see how the casual viewer can be left cold after an initial viewing (no pun).

People like that would prefer Armageddon to Deep Impact. People who don't think. The Thing works on such a visceral, primordial level. The fear of the unknown. The fear that people you know, people you work with and trust, under their mask of humanity are really amoral, amorphous monsters determined to spread their interests and DNA. And the ending is one of the greatest film endings of all time. You can never know who's really who. You can never truly know anyone.

I couldn't disagree more.
"The Thing" was a great film! It was in no way a poor effort by Carpenter. He did get some flak for it but it was more in his timing of its release.
"Starman" is a very good film too, but it does drag in spots & its also a COMPLETELY different type of scifi film.
I would never even compare the two.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

Did Carpenter really said that? "forgive me for what i've done with The Thing". I like starman and you really can't compare the two films but to say that the thing sucks or anything like that is crazy , I do agree that carpenter evolved more as a director for starman in terms of storytelling and perhaps a more mature film for him also. it's a good film but it's not as memorable as his other films but it's better than all his films he did in the 1990's. I can understand that some fans see this film as his best work but I think that's because he did something else instead of the usual horror/action film that he is most famous for.

The only thing Carpenter should apologise for, is Starman!
Very dumb rip off of E.T without a shred of that films quality, emotion or humour.
Starman is a science fiction film for people that don't really like science fiction.
The plot is ridiculous and contrived, without an ounce of intelligence. In fact it treats it's audience as if it had no sense. Mind you not sure what that says about the people that were taken in by this garbage.
Was it a millionaire who said "Imagine no possessions"?
