Great directing from Gene Wilder, a touching scene with an uncomfortable theme (for its time) yet he handled it masterfully within a comedy.
First time I watched it, I thought the man was the husband of a woman (unseen) that Grodin had an affair with. Then I thought he was the young guy's father. Only later I connected it with the "shocking pink" reference. A bit too subtle, maybe, or maybe I just can't take a hint.

the scene with Grodin picking out clothes for Wilder makes perfect sense. The flamboyant leather clothes Wilder is wearing and him saying "are you sure"? then grodin reassuring that's ok and the robert redford hairdo. then the looks on Wilders work mates faces when he shows off his new look. they all must of thought he was a total fruit.
