There are many kinds and similar products like sasparilla and birch beer. Small batch root beer is fantastic. The commercial stuff isn't that great. There's an east coast brand, Stewart's, that's the absolute best. Also comes from a small chain of drive ins like A&W.

Root Beer used to be available from McDonalds in England, certainly in the 1980s but I haven't seen it on their menu for some years.

I remember when I was a I kid at a Christmas family get together decades ago, I was drinking a can of root beer and without realizing it, when I was holding the can, my fingers were covering up the word
root
so only the word
beer
was shown and my aunt was freaking out thinking I was drinking a can of beer

My friend from England had never had it, so I made her a float with IBC and Breyer's vanilla ice cream. She loved it.
