I looked him up. Matthew Broderick was born in 1962 and this film was released in 1989. If they spent a year making it, he was 26 years old when they did most of the filming.
Robert Gould Shaw enlisted at the age of 23. If that was as early as April of 1861 when the war started (started by those rebels firing on Federal property at Fort Sumter, mind you), then he was only 25 years old in 1863 when he died (killed by the rebels again) at Fort (or Battery) Wagner.
Matthew Broderick was a year too old to be playing Colonel Shaw!

I saw him as guest programmer last night on TCM. He looks about thirty, even though he is in his early fifties. shrug
Enjoy the advantages that your genes allow.

Are you serious or this a joke? If serious, Broderick has a baby face and looks younger to this day then he really is. And secondly, people then lived a much harder life than us so people would look more aged than they were

I recommend that you go online and do a search for images of Robert Gould Shaw. I was, of course, being facetious about Broderick's age because so many people have complained about his youth without doing any research.

Unfortunately for Mr. Broderick, the real Shaw saw the elephant, while our cinema hero could only pretend. Sometimes the camera can tell the difference.
