It basically sets the tone for the entire film and it is perfect representation of what Last Crusade really is: A kiddie campfest (much like Batman and Robin).
Oh please. This movie does have it's share of dark scenes. Like the skeletons lying around in the crypt, the guy's head getting chopped off (you wouldn't see that in Batman and Robin), and Indy's father getting shot. Frankly TC, you strike me as one of those Nolan Batman fans who thinks every movie needs to be the same tone as TDK.
    Green Goblin is great!

The movie didn't have any dark scenes, it was all completely campy and comical and was a major departure from the dark, gritty tone set by the first two films.
Batman and Robin had people getting frozen to death, far darker than anything out of Last Crusade. It also didn't have Mickey Mouse jokes.

Donovan's hellish supernatural death scene is far darker than anything in Batman and Robin. This movie is far darker than Batman and Robin. It's not even close. And as another poster pointed out we see a man's head get chopped off in this movie. That didn't even happen in Batman Returns.

If you look at the goofs, he actually said Jesse Owens during filming, which is a reference that an audience in the set time period would get. But it was felt that the 1989 audience wouldn't get the reference, so it was dubbed over later to say "Mickey Mouse".
I know who Jesse Owens is now, but I certainly didn't when I was a kid, so maybe this was wise. Interestingly, I went to Disney World in the summer of 1989. So I was very familiar with Mickey Mouse.

I knew who Jesse Owens was ever since 3rd grade, Spielberg changed it because he was trying to dumb down the movie for pre-schoolers.

                  You want darker than that?
Yes, such as sacrifical rituals. Last Crusade is a complete joke, the target audience was pre-schoolers.

Raiders and Temple were geared towards adults. Last Crusade was for pre-schoolers.

I don't understand what's so terrible about the Mickey Mouse joke in the movie. The point the butler was trying to make was that he couldn't believe that Indy was a Scottish lord. It was as absurd as the butler claiming to be Mickey Mouse would be. I don't see the problem.

The Mickey Mouse joke was a huge problem because it basically summarized the tone of this film and that it was a campy kiddie adventure. Just look at the first two movies, they were mature, dark and gritty you'd never imagine that anyone would insert Mickey Mouse humor in this franchise. It's blatantly obvious why Spielberg made the movie the way he did, there were too many complaints from parents that Temple was too scary for kids so he pussed out and made a movie for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Willie on the elephant the wrong way around whining, Indy running around with hot feet shouting "water!", Short Round beating up the thuggess, mallet on the head, Willie and Short Round acting out Indy's punches, supposedly weak child slaves overcoming their captors
Real mature, dark and gritty stuff right there

That was one dumb moment in Temple (and yes Temple was far from perfect but it was still good), the entire second half of the film makes up for that. The difference here is that kind of humor lasted the entirety of Last Crusade only in Last Crusade they managed to make it even more bland and painful to listen to.
Also I think it's pretty obvious that Spielberg made the beginning of Temple so campy because he was trying to mislead the audience as to what kind of movie he was making, he wanted to shock them once Indy got into the Temple and they realized how dark and sadistic it really was.
Make no mistake though, Raiders and Temple were for adults, Last Crusade was for toddlers.

Erm, the movie becomes campy again after Indy comes out of his possession.
Apart from the section with the sacrfice and Indy's possession, the movie is full of slapstick.

You have a strange definition of camp, Indy still is tortured by a voodoo doll, gets into a bare knuckles fist fight with a Thuggee twice his size, he has one of the most iconic and badass moments of the entire series (when he frees the kids) and he cuts a rope bridge that he, Short Round and Willie are currently on.
Temple did have a little too much slapstick but it was nothing compared with Last Crusade. Last Crusade is kind of like Spaceballs, the plot of the movie doesn't really matter as long as you laugh along the way, the only difference is Spaceballs was actually funny.

Not at all. Short Round going 3 ninjas on the thuggees, the weak child slaves overcoming the "tough" thuggees, Willie surviving being a few feet away from lava without the cage even been hot, Indy running around with hot feet, Short Round and Willie acting out Indy's punches, the water reaching the end of the cave despite all the caverns and lava pits.
                                        All camp and ridiculous stuff.

And it's combined with dark, mature and sadistic subject matters such as voodoo, child slavery, black magic, etc. Temple was about 80% mature subject matter, 20% camp, Last Crusade was pretty much 100% camp with things like speeches about bedtime stories, sequences where the hero and the villain become good friends, Mickey Mouse jokes, etc.
