Why did Annie do that to the babies??

Was it ever revealed why Annie murdered the babies?
Was it simply because she was a psychopath so no reason other than that? Or was 'more background' given, like she hated their crying, etc.?

Plus, even psychopaths 'have reasons' for what they do. I was merely wondering if it was ever revealed why Annie did it.

In the book, King reveals that to Annie there are 2 kinds of people in the world: "dirty birdies" and "poor dears" that need to be put out of their misery. By killing the babies she felt she was relieving their suffering.

Its hard to imagine the Annie of the film being that "benevolent" (her type of benevolent, not sane people's).
I take it they could not prove she killed the babies then? I read the book over 20 years ago, and don't recall much of it as I hated it.

No, they never proved it. Everyone knew she'd done it, but she was careful and they never were able to really prove it. She still lost her job and everyone always reminded her of it (kids would drive past her house and yell "Dragon Lady" at her, among other things), but she never was charged with a crime.

In the book she was charged with the deaths of several of the children and taken to trial, but she was found not guilty. She was in prison during the trial, presumably because she was either not able to raise bail, or was being held without bail due to the nature of the crimes.

I don't think you know much about the things you are talking about here. People running their mouths constantly about mental illnesses they have no education about is a lot of the reason people with mental illnesses get such inadequate care.
And sadomasochism? Sadism, yeah, probably, but when did she enjoy receiving pain of any sort? -

That doesn't explain much. Millions of people are abused as children, they don't grow up to be a baby killer & kidnap authors.
