With all due respect to the homosexual croud, no genuine heterosexual could be attracted to Dil. Even if you are deaf, dumb and blind enough to not realize it is a man straight off, there is nothing remotely sexually attractive about Jaye Davidson to a heterosexual orientation. He looks and acts like a feminized man trying to imitate a woman (exactly what he is), which is a major turn-off to any true hetero. I'm serious, Patrick Swayzee in
      To Wong Fu
      is more attractive.

I thought I had missed something. I heard a man's voice and thought, "who's saying that?" And saw Dil's mouth moving. I thought "oh she's a he", I must have missed them mention that. I was genuinely shocked when Fergus acted like he didn't know.

With all due respect both you and the OP are off your rockers. Jaye very convincingly plays a young woman. She (Dill, the character),she has Jaye's delicate features, and Jay plays her feminine. You may be confused because he isn't doing drag or something extreme to "over-compensate." But he very much looks like a gorgeous hot female.
If you have never seen even androgynous females, you are missing a whole genre of people are drop-dead stunning. One can be androgynous and still come across as distinctly male or female. I never confused David Bowie with a girl and I never confused Jaye with a boyyet both carry androgyny looks. So did Jonathan Rys Meyers in Velvet Goldmine. It still shines through.
Dill is beautiful and classy and feminine. She isn't over the top like a Jayne Manfield or Marilyn Monroe or Dita Von Teese (btw: I ADORE and admire all of those women beyond belief!) She's just good ole Dill, an average, but prettier than regular, female. Jaye, the actor is male,.Dill the character clearly plays a female. And,it's done well.
If you found Patrick Swayzee in To Wong Foo attractive and not Dill it's because of your insecurity and need to be absolutely positive it's a dude under all that garb, it makes you feel safer because you're less likely to get "tricked" and you couldn't handle the embarassment.

Yes, I knew it was coming. And you're right, Jaye was lovely as a woman. I was actually jealous! But still, I remember thinking there was something manly about Dill in the scenes leading up to the great unveiling.

I was only 12 when I first saw the promos for this back in 1993, and the moment I saw Dil, I thought to myself, "I bet that's a man." And when I saw the film for the first time, the instant I saw and heard Dil, I knew it had to be a male. However, I did not expect this to be revealed in the film (I never heard about the movie having a twist), assuming that TCG, being an artsy/indie type film, Jay Davidson was just a transvestite trying to play a real woman.
Jaye Davidson is androgynous, not feminine. Anyone who was genuinely surprised by the "twist" would be easily burnt by a bad drag queen.

I thought she looked like a man and when she started taking off her clothes I knew it wasn't going to be pretty, but I was still shocked/disturbed as hell when she turned out to be a he and it got me more than any other movie i've ever seen.

This conversationI think this is the wrong aspect of the relationship to be considering. Some people were surprised, many weren't. I, myself, did not know the twist before I watched it, and I thought Dil was a man before it was revealed. BUT, I think what is more important is if the relationship still works. Even though Fergus is obviously repulsed when he finds out, they still stay together. And, I found myself rooting for them to work. AND, it wasn't as if it negatively affected my perception of Fergus either. Somehow Neil Jordan managed to force the viewer to reevaluate the relationship while leading us, or at least me, to accept the unconventional (or even deviant) connection between Fergus and Dil. Did everyone else want them to work too?

The first time I saw this film (now a favourite of mine) my boyfriend (now ex-boyfriend) was at first genuinely attracted by Dill and said she was very sexy and seemed to enjoy the film a lot.. when it was evident Dill was not a "she", he was totally SHOCKED and confused and was even angry at me because I chose such a film! What a jerk.. no wonder I dumped him in the end!

I think it was mainly the bone structure of the face, particularly the jaw, that made me suspicious. I told my date "I think Dil's a TV." (I guess that that abbreviation was less ubiquitous than I thought so I had to explain.) Later when Dil went down on him but wouldn't let him touch her/him it seemed even more plausible. At the moment of truth my date went "Gasp, you were right!" With benefit of hindsight, I wish I'd talked her into a wager.
