Sir/Ma'am, you have just uttered the most brilliant line that would help me through IMDB threads for as long as I log in.
"each to his own opinion (thankfully)"
You have no idea how much sense & power that "thankfully" packs. And just the right dose of sarcasm! 😉

Totally disagree; IMO "Dial 'M' for Martin" is one of the best and funniest episodes of the entire series.

I noticed that in Seasons 8 and 9 (which I abhorred) that Martin softened up a bit and laughed more and was a delightful character, Frasier seemed to be more uptight and yelling more. a bit of a reversal.
(I notice this because my dog seems to like the voice of Frasier to fall asleep to but he kept looking up startled instead of relaxing.)

Well, of course Frasier became more uptight with that old cooter in his house. That would make anyone batty!

It certainly made you batty. You can't seem to stop repeating yourself.

Wow. That's one of the most idiotic ideas for an alternative storyline on a TV show I have ever heard. No, wait, it is the most idiotic idea.

That's if they are great. Yours is not, you insipid baboon. I'd rather see your funeral than Martin's.

If you have a great actor doing a great job portraying a great character you do not ruin that. What's more, you simply do not kill a 60-something grandpa in a sitcom.

Precisley. And Martin was IMO the heart of the show. His problems with the boys were there, and he wasn't perfect, but he was teh one who had taught them what was good in them, as Niles says in one ep "where do you think I learned my ethics"
You could maybe write out Daphne but you simply could not write out Martin Niles or Frasier.

Why don't you ask John Malkovich, he's the one who "found" John Mahoney at a playhouse?
If you don't think he's a great actor (watch Say Anything), justify your opinion.

You make it sound like Martin was a one-dimensional character, just a grumpy old man gimmick. There was so much more to him than that. After a few seasons it was easy to share his joy and pain as much as Frasier or Niles.

Exactly! Martin is one more example (of many) where the show took what most would use as a standard comedy cliche and made it far better and the character with a lot more depth.
It's one of my worst pet peeves and applies in far too many comedies, where a secondary character has a particular career, or a physical handicap, or something, and every single line is related to that.
In lesser talented hands, Martin would respond only as a cop to every single situation or question, no matter how unrelated to police work, and refer to himself as a cop every conversation. THAT version of Martin, I would have had to agree with the OP, only bumping him off by about the second or third season.
