Mask of the Phantasm is definitely better than TDKR and Batman Begins. Is it better than the Dark Knight? Mark Hamill is really good in this as the Joker, but so was Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight. Personally, I think Ledger's performance, while brilliant, was overhyped because of his unfortunate death. And I prefer Kevin Conroy waaaaay more than Christian Bale. He just has so much more emotion in his voice, and it doesn't sound like he has throat cancer when he's the Batman - plus, Kevin Conroy's the one who started the whole alternate voice gimmick in the first place. So I actually think Mask of the Phantasm was better than any of Nolan's flicks, the Dark Knight included.

I especially agree w/ the voice. W/ Kevin Conroy, you know when he's playing Batman and when he's playing Bruce Wayne. When I first heard Christian Bale's voice change, all I could think was "Get that man a lozenge!"

I completely agree this is better than TDKR,i was so pissed at nolan for ruining what could have been an flawless trilogy. He was just too damn eager to finish the films but along with that made so many mistakes. But this was awesome and still is i remember winning this on vhs in a contest as a child and i still have the tape.

Most superhero movies suck, but the good ones put other blockbusters to shame.

To me, this remains the best Batman theatrical movie by a long shot.

mask of the phantom > TDKR
TDKR is a crap of a movie, its a copy cat of TDK hense why talia is a twist villian all of a sudden just like two face was in TDK but it simply did not work for the movie. the story is actually pretty degrading to batman at the very beginning since why would he spend 7 years as cripple when hes a billionarie and could have fixed that way early in time and is a wimped depressed bitch for rachel who is dead and seems to not get over it, yeah it just pure crap
MOTP is easily in top 5 of best batman film

I just had a MOTP hankering and for me THIS is the best Batman/Bruce Wayne rendition on film.
One aspect of the movie NOT talked about is the film score, songs and voice work. Just outstanding!!

I have had "The Dark Knight Rises" since it was released & still have not gotten past the 1/2 hour mark.
Yet I have watched "Worlds Finest" The Batman/Superman movie 3 times & GL:TAS all 26 episodes 3 times yet Nolans film is too long & long winded & I do not like Christian Bale. He was OK as American Psycho but he is just does not do it for me.
I actually did see this on the big screen & Andrea's speech at the end had me sobbing!!
Batman: Your father's dead, isn't he? You came into town early to get Chuckie Sol, so you could shift the blame to your father if necessary.
Andrea Beaumont: They took everything, Bruce. My father, my friends, my life, you. I'm not saying it's right, or even sane but it's all I have left! So either help me, or get out of the way!
Batman: You know I can't do that.
Andrea Beaumont: Look what they did to us! What we could have had! They had to pay!
Batman: But Andy what will vengeance solve?
Andrea Beaumont: If anyone knows the answer to that, Bruce, it's you.
                              [silent pause]
                              Batman: Leave, Andy, now. Please.
Sorry I can't get that in BOLD but that was one of the best speeches ever given in the entire DC universe!!
Also Dana Delaney (she is Andrea & Lois Lane (in superman:TAS)) she has a great voice & I guess I will have to watch some regular TV so see her in action.
At any rate MASK OF THE PHANTASM is the best DVD so far!!

While Nolan did create a solid trilogy out of his Dark Knight movies, (even with all the flaws), this is still a superior film.

Frankly this movie, The Animated Series and the Arkham Games are all better than any of the Live Action movies. I felt the only Live Action film that got batman remotely right was Batman Begins. Hell Batman had Better Detective skills in the 1966 Batman series then in all of TDK or TDKR.

I hated TDKR. It was too long, 1000 plots that weren't needed and it suffers from the typical Nolan weakness, the "analysis" of these so called "deep" films are presented in front of the viewer instead of it being like normal people talking and letting the analysis work itself out for the viewer. In that sense it fails as a "realistic portrayal of Batman" and it fails as a blockbuster because nothing about the film allows you to relax.
Mask Of The Phantasm, I only hated one thing about it. The pacing is too fast; I know this was back in the day of hand drawn animation but much of the love scenes are too fast that they never get a chance to breathe. Besides that, I enjoyed just about everything. The voice acting is virtually flawless, the animation is fantastic, the story is top notch (although it still could've worked as a 3 part episode in the show), I would rate it as my 2nd favourite Batman film. Right under the 1989 one.

I like this more as well, but I still enjoy DARK KNIGHT RISES. I'm not sure which film I prefer, this or DARK KNIGHT. This animated Batman/Bruce Wayne is still the best in my opinion. I've never really be a Christian Bale Batman fan, and it's not just his voice. His Bruce Wayne seems to be a terrible business man, and he pretty much gives up Batman. One of the things I like about BATMAN FOREVER actually was that it was the first time Bruce really embraced Batman, not as a way to avenge his parents, but because he can do good in the world.
I don't think there needs to be a love story at all in a Batman film, and frankly that whole thing with Rachel in the Nolan trilogy was stupid. Bruce should've known since BATMAN BEGINS they had no future together.
