I think who I'm choosing more closely resembles Jack but could easily play Walter's part. I'm picking John Mahoney. They're quite a bit apart in age, but if Mahoney is Lemmon, I want Chris Cooper for Matthau.

I read these posts with suggestions about remakes with dismay. Jack Nicholson? Not a comic at all.
The truly great talents like Matthau and Lemmon were so versatile. GOM was a comedy and I love it for its sheer comedic talent and the opportunity to watch masters of their craft in their twilight years.
Watch Charade for Walter's bad man portrayal (he was great and makes a great baddie), and Days of Wine and Roses and Mr Roberts for Jack Lemmon's super range. Burgess Meredith was wonderful in Rocky and superb in this.
No senseless remakes please!
