The proper way to drink whiskey or whisky is through the mouth, down the throat. Anything else is personal taste and personal taste only.

God there are some REAL snobs here. I've been drinking whiskey many years and If I have it with ice or without does not dictate whether or nor some snob considers me a REAL whiskey drinker. I wish those types would keep their damn opinions to themselves. The only ones that want to hear them is themselves.

I'm a Bourbon drinker, and I like mine on the rocks. It's a matter of taste, and all this yammering about what makes for a "proper" whisky drinker is just a tad bit silly.

I think the "on the rocks" is an American phenomenon; in Great Britain even the beer in the pubs used to be room temperature; I don't know if that has changed but it was true in the late Seventies.
For me it depends on the whiskey too; as I said I am primarily a Bourbon drinker and I like it with ice, but occasionally I will drink Irish whiskey and that I will take neat.

I've been in the UK in the winter, and I think the cellars are cold enough to keep the beer nice and frosty anyway lol. Not sure about the summer, but I'm guessing the cellar would still be cooler than a crowded pub above.
I'm sure when they started to artificially chill beer there would have been superior folks moaning about how that was the incorrect way to drink

OP is a moron. I drink tons of Scotch and enjoy it both straight and on the rocks. Also I have talked to many Scots about the subject and they are completely divided as to which way they prefer but almost all of them said the same thing: drink it however it tastes best to you. If you are saying ice kills the taste you clearly have very weak taste buds, because even on the rocks I can decipher between a vast array of scotches.

It was a f-cking cool scene with the always wonderful Anne Bancroft though - partly because it strongly reminded of a scene in Chandler's Farewell My Lovely (I think it made it into the 1975 film as well). Even though there the focal beverage was cheap gin.
