Thanks for recognizing that these are OPINIONS, especially since you said earlier that what you said was "the truth".
Would you mind letting us know what are some movies you do rank highly?

It's rather irrelevant but off the top of my head in no particular order
Dr. Strangelove (saw it today so it's on my mind, a masterpiece)
The Best Years of Our Lives
        2001: A Space Odyssey
The Apartment, and so many Wilder films. . .
        The Godfather (I and II)
        How Green Was My Valley
        Sunset Blvd.
        Local Hero
        The Roaring Twenties
        Casablanca
        The Verdict
        Network
        The Thing (1951)
        Now, Voyager
Well, there's a bunch. I notice that I've named mostly films from Hollywood's "Golden Age," as it is often referred to. Well, they were superior in many ways, but there are numerous films of the 60's through the 90's (though far less) that I rate very highly.
Have you learned anything? Does this give you any insight into anything? Did you find some pattern that you feel pigeon-holes me so you can shoot down my opinion regarding this tripe called "Forrest Gump"?

No, I was just wondering what movies you liked. It's fine that you dislike FG just like it's fine that I like it. Not everyone on this board has an agenda.

            Cool.
May I ask, then, in the spirit with which you asked your question, I would also like to ask, why you are curious about films I rate highly?

Dunno; was curious, I guess. When a person hates a film that, oh I'd guess 8 out of every 10 people either like or love, its common interest to wonder what movies that person likes. I must say your list is impressive.

Yes, which is why I bothered to make this post! So many people LOVE this film! But so many people love Miley Cyrus, and rap music, too. I have my own theories. . . .
My list is sort of "can't miss," great films. I mean, you'd have to be totally brain dead not to appreciate these films. Others, not on the list, that I love, may not be so popular or thought of very highly. Like, "CARWASH"!! Can you imagine?

I'm a 48 year old white guy and I really like all three of the Friday movies with Ice Cube. So yes, I know what you're saying.

I saw this in its opening weekend in 1994 and was not impressed. I was almost embarrassed for the movie. It seemed such a bald ode to baby boomers and it was all surface references. It's like a movie for children except it has cocaine and premature ejaculation in it. The OP said it was like a movie for 12 years olds and I'm afraid he's not far off. It's like the movie equivalent of those "history for Dummies" books.
I didn't come here to insult or fight. My motivation was this: I saw it again for the first time in 21 years the other night and it's the same. No worse, no better.
I will say this: dog-piling Tom Hanks is out of bounds. He did the best he could with this task. Any sequences in which he caused me to wince were actually the faults of the director and editor.
Also, on the road in Monument Valley, when Gump says he's going home, he turns around and starts walking west.
                      Alabama's the other way, Forrest.
                      "Rampart: Squad 51."

Very well said, but "Dog piling" on Hanks is not at all out of bounds if you believe his performance merits it, and thus, adds to the poor experience of watching the film. Why not?
Perhaps you are a Hanks fan, and fans do not like to have their hero's criticized.

OK, then how do you account for the movie's stunning box-office take? It's not enough to say "Oh geez, some folks just have bad taste!" What if, in fact, it's YOU that has the faulty taste, not the public at large?

I will say 12 year olds aren't even a target audience for this film. I saw this when I was 10 and didn't care for it mainly because I was more into films like Ghostbusters and Arnold Schwarzenegger films. Watching a drama is not something a 12 year old wants to do.
