In Greece we also translated "Interview with
a
Vampire"
If the German release was translated as "Interview with the Vampire", the translation would have been "Interview mit dem Vampir" ("dem" in German means "the"). -

Are you kidding me? I own the bloody movie for years, I know what the title on the disc said and it was A vampire! Not pulling it out for a very long time I see it says THE Vampire. Ok seriously freaked out here.

Actually I own a dvd copy of the movie.
Can't say exactly when I bought it but it was years ago. My native language is french and where I live most DvD (or blu-ray now)are sold with both English and french versions on it.
As I remember, in french, it was "
A
".
So I looked on the DvD and it has both french and english titles.
The french titles is : Entretien avec
UN
vampire.
It translate as: Interview with
A
vampire (
Un
means one, either the number 1 or as in this case, one example/individual/unit from the whole lot).
BUT
, the english title written on the disc is Interview with
THE
vampire.
The chronicles (chroniques in french) is there in both titles.
So, in my opinion, the confusion comes from people having seen the movie with its "original" ( I take a guess that the book was written in english first) english title and people who have seen it with its translated title, talking to each other. Sometimes there is no "perfect" word-for-word translations so depending on our sources, we may end up with different versions.
As for the changes on the site, I have no idea when it was made. -

That somehow, a change was made retroactively, through space and time, and it was then applied to all the book covers, dvd cases, vhs boxes, etc ?

While I don't think it's absolutely impossible, I do think that some probable explanations are being overlooked while not being completely debunked.
A few years ago, I read an article about the fact people often quoted incorrectly what they heard in the movies. A quick google search (

) will give you a list of many popular movies that we, the general population, quote incorrectly.
So either, just like it is the case with the
Interview
movie, we all remember correctly the quotes and/or titles and the list of things that changed over time just got way longer or our memory is far from perfect.
Just looking at some of those quotes, you realize that we probably remember the global idea more than the exact thing. Or, we are so used to hearing and reading something that we don't pay attention to what is
really
being said or written. Those quotes were used and are still being used so they remain in the collective consciousness but what if they were incorrect except for when you hear them in the actual movie ?
Another example can be seen with a coffee company. While I'm not a coffee enthusiast, my parents were always and still are today. So back in my youth I had to follow them to the coffee shop. One of the shop they used to go a lot was what is now known simply as
Van Houtte
. But back in my youger days, all the signs were actually showing
A.L
. Van Houtte, not just Van Houtte.

The A.L. stands for Albert-Louis. It is the name of the guy so it wasn't there just for fun or as an error.
Yet these days, the company chose to keep only the family name, Van Houtte. You won't find the letters A.L. anywhere except on a few ads or some papers.
So, my take that somebody might have noticed the "error" of having the title use
A
instead of
The
and decided to correct it despite the fact the title had an
A
in the collective consciousness.
With information and by seeing others make the change I would assume many followed, so now you only find the "other" title, with
THE
.
