No. Harrison Ford actually turned the role down before Morgan Freeman was involved, so the producers weren't necessarily looking to hire a black actor. It just happened to be a role where the race of the character was not a major factor.
The same cannot be said with the casting of Idris Elba in another King adaptation,
The Dark Tower
, although the reasons why have to do with a character who wasn't featured in the movie. Thankfully it was a failure and we didn't have to see how they would have attempted to make Susannah/Detta make sense in the sequels.

I'm all for casting a different race when it doesn't matter, but yeah, I don't want a DT adaptation that doesn't have Detta calling Roland a "honk' muh fuh" lol.
What I hate about that movie is there likely won't be another attempt at an adaptation, and I really wanted to see a proper one.
I also wanna see Langoliers remake with better CGI. I have a soft spot for the 90's TV movie, but it is cheesy. -
