of time to discover an ad-hoc solution using their own ingeniuty. I would compare it to mechanics in rural Africa.

You can't nitpick this movie or you'll never enjoy it. There's a great story here, but things like how they get filtered cigarettes, fuel, how the water rose, how a child has a world map as a birthmark and other things has to just be accepted. Without those little things the movie would be very boring.
